St Johns Wort is a herbal remedy that is clinically proven for mild to moderate depression, but severe depression requires a combined approach - antidepressant medication (and there are several different types that suit different people) with cognitive behavioural therapy. If you don't want to see your family doctor then you could look out for voluntary sector mental health clinics in your community that can offer all sorts of counselling. St John's Wort maybe a complementary medicine but it is known to have a few contra-indications meaning that you need to get a doctors opinion before use if you take other medication as it would appear to inhibit the action of certain drugs...warfarin to name just one! It is also unsuitable for people having surgery for example and should not be combined with conventional antidepressants.

Well - I'll pass on prescription medications as I do not recommend going down that route.
There is however a herbal remedy called St John's Wort and it is very effective at treating mild to moderate depression.
It can enhance your state and mood so that you are more able to tackle the things in your life that are causing you to feel depressed. There is A LOT of information on the Internet about this drug, so go take a look on Google.

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT try to self-medicate. Depression medication messes with the serotonin levels in your brain. If you really have clinical depression-- which something only a doctor can determine for you-- then the meds will help. If you DON'T have clinical depression and the depression you're feeling is caused by environmental, traumatic or just plain bad events in your life, then the meds will seriously fuck with your mind. It will cause your serotonin levels to become artificially elevated and your body will stop producing this happy hormone naturally, which could lead to all sorts of problems for you. Some shitty internet forum is NOT the place to get advice on this subject. Please try to see a doctor or go to a free clinic or something.

if you are aware that you are depressed and want to medicate yourself, i would suggest you see a doctor. i say this because there are so many different types of meds, that combat the many more types of depression. you could be trying to treat with the wrong meds. my mother has been diagnosed with clinical depression since august of this year and they have tried many types of meds. some made her sick, some made her happy for a few weeks, now they think they have the right meds for her, but seeing her go through changes so quick, moods drop and rise like having a split personality. i can see her start to find herself on a level happiness.
definatly talk with a doctor, they can monitor you, set you up with counsiling.
someone outside of your life to talk to, that has no close connection.
you have made the first step in saying you need help, please have the courage to take the next step to see a doctor even if its just for advice.
all the best, good luck xxxsxxx
