Is the first period when you begin the pack of contraceptives meant to last longer than usual?

hi i've just recently started to take the pill but i'm slightly confused.

the instructions say to start the pill on the first day of your period which i did. but it doesn't say what's meant to happen as in are your periods meant to stop straight away because i'm taking the pill?

the reason i'm asking is because i have been taking the pill as instructed but my period has been lasting for way over a week now (when before i was on the pill they only lasted 4 days).

i know it can change your periods when you've been on the pill for a while but is your first period when you begin the pack meant to last so long?

Maybe the pill you are on is not good for you. Read the side effects of the particular pill you are on and go to a gp and have them check you over and maybe prescribe a different sort of pill for you. If your period lasts this long every month you risk being anaemic.
