Is she stringing me along?

A male Canada age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This is just something that I'm confused about and would like some insight on. A week from today, my girlfriend and I broke up. I first suggested that we take a break to see how we can work together to meet each other's needs. We talked about it and we both agreed that to do that, we need to understand each other better, ergo, we need to become better friends. The relationship between my girlfriend and I always lacked a strong friendship, so I agreed and said I'd love to work on our friendship. Then at the end of the conversation, she said she was so confused and didn't know what to do, so she ended up breaking up with me - saying she needs time to work on our friendship and once we have that, we can be together again.

She said that she does want to come back to me and she does love me. Which I know she means she still has feelings about me and can see herself with me, hence why she wants to become better friends first.

It's been a week now and we've been talking more or less like we would have as friends. I guess, I'm not sure. We've been talking normally as if there's no connection between us. I try to be sweet and show affection as It's hard not to, but she simply says thank you. And by sweet and showing affection, I don't mean saying I love you and I miss you and all that stuff, I mean I sincerely show care and affection. She on the other hand just talks to me like she just met me. To me, that really bothers me and it's rather confusing and giving me a heartache now.

My question is: Is she stringing me along? If she’s not ready for us now to be in a relationship because of our lack of strong friendship, but she will be when we become better friends, and meanwhile she can treat me as someone she just met? It just doesn’t make any sense to me. I still have feelings for her and to this day, I still think we shouldn’t have broken up to do that – because to me, that means the relationship ended. I think we could have stayed together and slow things down and become better friends while still being a couple, as that means there’s still a meaning to things.

What do you guys think?
