It is a better chance of getting pregnant after your cycle. Listen to your mother.

A reader, anonymous, writes (5 March 2007):

Stina is correct. Anytime you have sex and it doesn't matter when, you are at great risk of becoming pregnant, dear. It doesn't matter if it's after your period, during your period or whenever. If you are having unprotected sex, you can get pregnant. In terms of conception, fertility depends on two major facors. a healthy egg, healthy sperm. All it takes is just one of those million little sperms to get at the egg and bingo--a baby is concieved! I'd be careful and use contraception...don't depend on your cycle.

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (5 March 2007):

birdynumnums agony auntThe egg is released 14 days before your period (whether your cycle is 26 days or 45 days). But, women can release an egg when they are fertile and stimulated by their partner, spontaneously, at any time during their cycle (on rare occasions). So it is best not to take any chances, always use a barrier method (condom) and an anti-spremicide or the pill unless you are planning on starting your family soon.

A female reader, chachacha United Kingdom +, writes (5 March 2007):

Your mum is even wrong about when the egg is released - at the end of the period, you start building up more lining for a potential baby, and about a week later the egg is released. It waits about for a bit, and if no sperm show up, at some point your hormones conclude you're not pregnant and the lining is shed (your period).

Sperm can live for a while inside you, so you could have sex at the end of the period, and then when the egg is released a bit later on, there is a sperm welcoming party waiting for it.

It's true that after your period finishes that you can't get pregnant for a few days but don't use this as a contreceptive as this doesn't follow for everyone.

A female reader, Farris United Kingdom +, writes (5 March 2007):

Farris agony auntThere is no time of the month when you are not fertile. That is YOU CAN GET PREGNANT AT ANY TIME WITHOUT PROTECTION.

That being said, there are certain times of the month when you are more likely to get pregnant; eg when you're ovulating.

Please practice safe sex. Then you don't have to worry about it at all.

Best wishes.

I wouldn't risk it when there is plenty of birth control things around today. Please don't mess around when you could get pregnant. An unwanted baby is not what you want. Please be careful.

Take care

A female reader, stina United States +, writes (5 March 2007):

stina agony auntHello Anonymous,

You can get pregnant at any time. If you're going to have sex, just use a method of birth control and don't rely on anyone's advice of when you can't get pregnant. It's better safe than sorry, right?

If you want to know all of the facts, perhaps it's time to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist or regular doctor. If you're not on any kind of birth control, then you might want to talk to your gyn about this, as well. Of course, there are always condoms if you don't want to go on the pill, use the ring, or any other sort of birth control method.

Take care.

A female reader, vina_101 United Kingdom +, writes (5 March 2007):

vina_101 agony auntPossible but I wouldn't swear by it and see it as a 100% true fact. You probably still can get pregnant. Yes there are times when you are less likely to get pregnant but there are NO definate times where it is impossible to get pregnant. There is always a chance. (as far as I know anyway). Be on the safe side and use protection.

I'm not doubting your mom's wisdom but you probably still can get pregnant just after your period, it might just be less likely. :)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 March 2007):

NO your mum is not right you can get pregnant having sex only once it does not matter if you have just finished your period, although it is less likely you will get pregnant at this time but you still can. please tell your mum she is wrong because you can end up with unwanted children if you believe this.
