 Everybody is different, I don't think there is a rule.
Personally, if I should pursue somebody without getting back any encouragement or sign of interest, I'd get tired sooner than 3 months. But maybe I am not very persistent.

 Everybody is different, whoever told you three months- completely pulled that figure out of thin air... Instantly, minutes, hours, days, weeks, years... everybody is completely different, only way to know is to try your luck.
