Is it possible to have an orgasm while you're sleeping?

Question - (8 June 2012) 2 Answers - (Newest, 9 June 2012)
A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have a question about orgasms and whether it is possible to have one while you're sleeping. I had one last night while dreaming and I realize that it wasn't the first time that it's happened. The dreams are sexual of course, but I can never remember details or who is doing the stimulating. But that is with all my dreams; as vivid as they are at the time, I won't remember much of anything five minutes after I'm awake. The even more astonishing thing about it is, I believe these are G-Spot orgasms that I'm having and not clitoral but I have never achieved a G-Spot orgasm in "real life" with any of my partners nor through masturbation. They've all been clitoral. The only reason I believe these are G-Spot orgasms is because I never recall stimulating myself yet I somewhat consciously feel the contraction of my vaginal muscles. I just think this is the weirdest thing and I'm wondering if anyone can provide some insight. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is this really a G-Spot orgasm that I'm experiencing? Thanks for your help.

A female reader, Madalo 1 Malawi +, writes (9 June 2012):

Clitoris is the source of orgasms, whether it has been stimulated or not, so you can even cum in your dreams. Contractions are only natural after orgasming. Even those who orgasm through intercouse achieve that because of their clit. You shouldnt feel like you're missing something because you have never experienced a "vaginal" orgasm. They all come from the clit and they are more or less the same. I even find the direct clitoral one more intense than one through intercourse.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (9 June 2012):

person12345 agony auntAll orgasms are clitoral. There is no such thing as a vaginal orgasm. Your G spot is basically the inner part of your clitoris. If you are feeling the contractions when you are dreaming but not when you masturbate, perhaps you are not actually reaching orgasm when you masturbate? Because contractions are a sign of orgasm, not a sign of a g-spot anything. The thing that mostly separates a G-spot orgasm from an external one is the sensations to get you there (and for some women, ejaculation).
