Tisha-1 agony auntApparently, cases have been reported of women becoming pregnant without penetrative sex. If semen containing sperm make it to the vulva, which is moist and warm, those little guys can swim up and in. They are very good swimmers, just think, they traverse the vagina, the uterus and wind up in the fallopian tubes, an inch or two outside the vagina isn't going to pose much of a problem if they are moist and warm.

Here's a corny but educational video:

Here's a chart outlining the various efficacies of birth control methods. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control//birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm If you click on the various methods, you'll be taken to a page that lists the information for each type. Also, note 'withdrawal' results in 30 pregnancies per 100 women who use that method for a year. That's a pretty high number if you don't want to get pregnant.

The best thing to do is to have a conversation with your gynecologist about the options available to you to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Good luck!

Yes, it is possible but not very likely. Be careful what you do, better safe than sorry.

A female reader, Sally_A Lebanon +, writes (29 December 2010):

hi, i work in the medical field, and actually TimmD it is possible to get pregnant even if the sperm isn't inside the vagina but close to it... like comming on the vulva, near to the vagina, even without penetrating the woman, there is a risk that the sperm migrates into the vagina, to the uterus and than into the fallopian tube, where it will fertilize the ovule, eventho the risk is low, but it's still possible

once we had a pregnant virgin in the hospital where i work

i agree with you about the STDs ... so please do use protecion.. ( pills do not protect you from STDs i suppose you know that a condom does, and the voth way of protecting urself against STDs and pregnancy is to combine both methods, and by that i mean condoms and pills )

the best way to learn more about it is to talk about ur physician or gunecologist... it's normal to ask these questions and you should not feel shy...

hope i helped... take care

A male reader, TimmD United States +, writes (29 December 2010):

TimmD agony auntQuite simply, sperm needs to be inside a woman's vagina to impregnate her. Generally, cumming "on" her poses no risk unless you do something like collecting it and putting it inside your vagina. Even then, the odds are very low. I'd say if you are not having sexual intercourse then you are safe from getting pregnant. More importantly, the more you get physical the more you need to plan on protection. Not just from pregnancy, but from sexually transmitted diseases. STD's can be transferred orally, or even just simply rubbing (no penetration) in certain scenarios.

Be careful and don't be too afraid to ask questions.
