A male reader, Cyberwit South Africa +, writes (4 October 2008):

Its very normal to smell fishy down there most of the time.

Whats wrong with fish anyway. If it smells of long dead fish then thats a different story - but that is not the norm.

Before we get the soap suds foaming lets get the grey matter going.

Freaken hell - we are not bees and flowers we are mammals and nature never intended or needed us to smell sweet and fragrant. That is something we have been taught to expect in the unnatural world we have created around us. It is an honourable expectation though, as bad odours are sometimes associated with risk of infection and desease.

But, we need to be very responsible with our expectations.

Using soap down there can cause more problems and make smells even worse.

Ladies if you take care of yourself - keep reasonably clean, dont sleep around with many partners (as this will introduce more types and availability of bacteria into your plumbing) And most of all learn about your body you will be fine no matter what any body tells you. Also as a women you are most often a bad judge of yourself, ie you are too harse on your body.

Learn about your vagina - its a wonderful asset - delivers so much - lovely babies, pleasure for you and you partner - even when it doesnt smell its best and last but not least power (never let the power go to your head though - you know what they say about us guys and the conection of our brains to out nether regions) at least some of us that is!

If you are taking care of yourself and you have a partner who is commenting on your odour, he needs to read this piece I have written.

First of all he needs to realize that all women are different some have longer noses than others and as such some have sharper odours than others - not to suggest that women with long noses have sharp odours - lol.

Would he stop dating you if you had a long nose or would he learn to kiss you from the side.

If he is still persistant, get him to do this:

Stick hes finger gently into his ear as far as it will go and get some of that icky ear wax on the end of his finger if he can - then ask him to smell it.

Most holes don't smell like roses or airfreshener.

Any desent bloke would approach this suject with love, respect and care as should you when dealing with him - tell him you look after yourself - that is if you do and dont be embarrased about the subject - its an opportunity for learning.

I, when encounting a bit of an odour - which is not my normal experience have simply blocked my nose with the roof of my mouth - which I know some people cant do.

Or, simply engaged in sex traditionally or differently.

Real bad odours dont last unles there is a serious problem

I can also say that, myself and I speak for most men I am sure, am very turned on by this musky (propper term for the vaginas odour) smell.

Our first experiences of sex - if they are resposible, right and exceptable as you should ensure they are, will emediately ensure that the brain associates this odour with exitement, pleasure and fun. I becomes a trigger rather than a smell - and if animals can get this right then I see no reason why people cant - after all we used to. Whether we are creationists or evolutionists 200 years ago we had no such thing as deodorizing wipes or soaps and more importantly less unrealistic expectations.

Remember girls, the female body, in all its forms, was designed beautiful. If all the skinny, perfectly good looking, and sweet smelling girls were removed from the world - SEX would not stop - I promise you it would no.

Men would not stop falling in love.

Focus more on being a good and fair person, but a strong women rather than what you look like (and worries about odour are more a case of worrying about image than a real problem in most cases) If you do that you will be fine.

I'll go down on you any day coz I know that you like most women and girls have a unique but normal vagina. yum.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (3 May 2008):

It depends. If you are very active and you sweat a lot and you wear tight underwear that do not allow air to flow threw you could find yourself smelling a little "fishy". If this occurs everyday you need to make an appointment to see your gyno. You should have a mild smell this is normal. Some men do not complain because they lack knowledge. The long time rumor of women since the day of time is that we smell of fish, but if that is the case then we have a bacteria that needs be treated with a antibiotic. I do not think that this smell turns anybody on. The reason why they keep coming back is because they are men.

Up here in Canada , we have two main brands of sardines in the supermarket , 'Bruinswick' and 'Clover Leaf'. when freshly opened , the Bruinswicks have the "real" fishy odor-that is the only good part about them. They are much cheaper than the 'Clover leaf' brand , but I seldom buy them because they taste too raw for me. However , when my girl's vagina smells "Bruinswick", I don't hesitate to plumb it's pleasures in all ways imaginable. Her huggy hole smells different on many occasions , but Bruiswick is one of my favs.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (5 March 2008):

Generally speaking, the 'scent' down-under should have very little odour. At worst a slightly sweet sweaty smell. Taste is initially salty with a tinge of 'lemon acid' type of pucker. However, when you get past this, the natural juices (if you are doing the right thing for her) replace this 'acidic' taste.

Hygiene is critical. Taking care to clean in and around the larger folds, puckers and crevices of the labia minora (those inner lips) where build up of 'Smegma' (a combination of dead cells, skin oils, moisture and naturally occurring bacteria) that can give a foul.

It is as delicate a subject as these lips themselves and one that needs to be handled with tenderness. If you get it right, (don't forget to ask what she wants) you will enjoy the fruits of your labour!

I have never understood the big concern over the fishy smell down there. After having been away from home for some time, the first day back with my gal is let down without those sweet fishy notes down there. But after a day or so the fish are back in the saddle and life is good.

I am transfixed by the smell of fish. To me, it is the smell of sex.

Yes - between 10 and 40 percent of all women have tried it. It is an inbalance in the bacteria in the vagina. The doctors call it bacterial vaginosis and treat it with antibiotics. Unfortunately very often it comes back.

In Europe we have now a natural remedy to strenghten the health of the vagina by supporting the woman's own bacteria. It is called LadyBalance and is a milk sugar vaginal tablet.

I would NOT trust what "Troys-Sweetie (26 October 2007)" wrote even though she claims to have studied it. It must have been something retarded because you should NEVER, let me repeat it, NEVER douche down there. It will screw it up and may cause something you never had or mess it up more if you had. The best you can do is whipe it clean with soap and water, and sleep without underwear. NO I'm not joking, wearing underwear keeps it from "airing out" so to speak, so lots of infections and what not can happen. If your that concerned a Gyn. would be good to see!

A male reader, anonymous, writes (8 November 2007):

The fishy smell can sometimes be the result of an infection but it can also sometimes be normal. If you eat a lot of seafood then that can also make the vagina smell like fish.

Some men are turned on by this and some are not. Personally I enjoy going down on a women and if her vagina smells fishy it turns me on more.

Blue_Angel0316 agony aunt Seek professional advice. Although discharges can range in color from white, grey, yello, clear and pink. They can also be green brown orange or milky. Know what color the dischage is and what exact smell is present. In your case it seems that the *fishy* smell is telling you that you have a problem. A fishy smell is definately a big concern because it is not a normal oder. The other post are correct in assumption that it is baterial vaginosis and it can lead to other problems if left untreated. It is most likely caused by Gardenerella infection and will need medical treatment.

Best regards and God bless.

Troys-Sweetie agony auntyou are eating way too much meat. if you eat a lot of meat and seafood then it will taste fishy. if you eat a lot of sugar candy, and fruit and veggies, it will taste sweet. if you eat a lot of dairy it will taste salty and bitter. trust me, i have studied this subject. also. if your man cums in you a lot, make sure you douche it out once a week. and after every period cycle. this will keep it clean and fresh. sorry to be so forward but hey.. that's me. :)

A female reader, RNaunt Canada +, writes (26 October 2007):

Hi,

well, a slight odour isnt something to be super concerned with but it could be an STI (ie. bacterial vaginosis has this as a common symptom). Just make sure that you have good hygiene (shower daily) and use non-perfurmed soaps that can annoy ur vagina and cause it to do some funky things. I would recommend going to a doctor to get it checked out b/c some STI's can have serious lifelong complications if you dont take care of them soon! (ie. sterility, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.). I don't mean to freak you out, sorry, computer messaging makes it hard to change ur tone! =)

good luck and take care!

My experience says it's not normal.

I have only been with one girlfriend who had a much of a taste at all, and that was my first girlfriend, when I was 16 (18 years and many girlfriends ago).

I have always assumed it was due to poor hygiene on her part, though I am not suggesting that - I have no idea why she tasted and smelled bad.

A reader, anonymous, writes (26 October 2007):

It's completely normal for your vagina to smell and even taste fishy. It can be a turn off for men, but so far, not likely, UNLESS, the smell is overwhelmingly putrid, then I would definitely suggest you or your partner wipe it with a clean wet towel before he goes down on you. That, or you take a shower beforehand.

If your man continues to lick and probe you through and through, even if your vagina is fishy, then it's a good thing. Just make sure it's not too bad, because it would be embarrassing for both of you, if he vomitted while licking you.

Slightly on-topic: One of my past partners, tasted like alkaline battery and raw lemon concentrate at the same time. Yeah, it was nice to get her off, but ugh! The taste! Had to douse her with wine, to make it not look obvious to her... Mhm.
