Hi guys, my apologies for this not being a question of love, rather a life matter, but I would really appreciate your advice. I currently live with my sister who just recently got a job and is moving to another country. I now have to decide to either find a place by myself or ask someone to move in with me. The cons of both of those options as I see it is that living by myself could be extremely lonely or living with a friend could put a strain on our relationship. I have a very small amount of time to make this decision and fear I will make the wrong one. I would love anyone who has experienced wither living situation to offer their advice. Thanks for reading xx

SirenaBlusera agony auntYou have to be careful about living with friends! I've had friends who became roommates and it nearly killed the friendship... for awhile they hated each other. It was a shame because they were really close. I think that we ALL do things that are inconsiderate; we don't deliberately do it; it's just that we're used to ourselves and other people aren't.

On the other hand, I'd get kind of lonely if I were all by myself. If you DO opt to live with a friend, then it's necessary to establish very clear expectations ahead of time so that there will be no misunderstandings. And, you MUST have some space all to yourself. I couldn't share a room with my best friend... I did... for a whole day and it was a fiasco. He (it was platonic) and I had a fight because I took too long to put makeup on. :( Yuck.

Another option: Get a pet, like a dog, cat, guinea pig, or hamster. Just make sure you're done your research and make sure you REALLY want one!! There are so many abandoned animals out there and it's a shame. The nice thing about a dog, though, is that they don't care if you leave towels strewn about or forget to wash the dishes as long as they're fed, watered, played with, etc. Warning... a dog is a HUGE responsibility! But dogs won't fight or argue with you and they'll love you unconditionally. Cats are a huge responsibility too, although a bit less maintenance than dogs. I prefer dogs, but I love cats, and my cat is very loving. Pet rescues have every breed and species you could want.

A reader, anonymous, writes (6 July 2010):

Neither. Live with a room mate because it helps make it affordible to pay all the costs, but never with a friend you'd like to keep in the future. Many times, room mates don't get along for various reasons, just like the shock some people find when they get married and start living together. If you want to make the risk extremely high of killing the friendship you have with a friend, start living under the same roof. A respectful room mate who doesn't stiff you on their bills and rent, and who doesn't drain your trust or tolerance in them is many times hard to find.. not because you OR them live the wrong way, necessarily, but because you live and take care of your place in different ways alot of the times. Working together with your room mate through communication can end alot of potential for future resentment and spats with each other. In many areas of the world today, living on your own can make things financially stressing, difficult or sometimes impossible.
