Lately I feel very tired and I always think I can do things better and that everything I do or buy or wear or do at work is never good enough, I try to relax I also have negative thoughts about my social life as I do not quite enjoy it very much I also try to be nice to all my family but sometimes I feel as if nobody cared very much about me nor family nor friends and keep on with life pretending nothing happens as I'm not ill and life goes on and see no way out of this I think I should try to relax and promote my self steem as when I analyse myself I can never be completely happy about anything and have no person to cheer me up this way, I had an aunt who used to be helpful but she died some years ago and I try to go on and do as if nohing happened but it does

any ideas to cheer up and be happy all day????I'm scared I could be a bit depressed I only disconect when I work or sleep and in the gym but the rest of the day gets me a bit nervous

tnaks a lot

cd206 agony auntThere are lots of things you can do to try and get your mood up naturally before you even consider asking the doctor for pills. Doctors are far too happy to hand out anti depressants like sweets these days and it's just not healthy. For a start exercise is great at lifting your mood, as is eating three meals a day. Trust me, if you eat less than that you'll be feeling tired and depressed in no time. The third thing you can do is always tell yourself you've done your best when you finish something because that's all you can do. The other thing is to try new things and new sensations. I live near a beach and whenever I feel low I just take a walk at sunset and look out over the water. There's nothing like it and I don't think anyone could look at that view and still feel sad. If all these fail ask your doctor to refer you to a counsellor. Try to avoid the pills at all costs. They do stop you feeling sad, trouble is they stop you feeling everything else too.

A female reader, Patient1 United States +, writes (9 February 2007):

Patient1 agony auntHello Astrid,

Have you ever been to the Doctor for depression? It could very well be a chemical imbalance. It could also be a lack of moral support. It's hard to be happy when you're the only person trying to make yourself happy. I'm sorry that your family and friends are not very supportive because that is a very important part of life. I would start by going to the doctor, if there is no chemical imbalance or a medical issue going on with you, I would start by trying to surround myself with positive/supportive people.

Maybe even some kind of therapy. No matter what, you deserve to be happy. Finding happiness is hard when you are not surrounded by the right people. And I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but sometimes bad things happen in life and it's impossible to be happy every day, all of the time. But it's how you deal with the circumstances that make you a happier person. I'll be your friend.

Anytime you're feeling low just shoot me an e-mail and I promise I'll respond the best way I can. Don't give up sweetie, life is naturally hard, but it's harder when you don't have any kind of support. I wish you the best always and I hope you feel better. I'll keep you in my prayers.
