I'm worried about the looks I will get if I buy condoms

A female Malaysia age 22-25, anonymous writes:

Hi all,

Recently, I got together with a guy and well, our relationship has been moving fairly quickly. I absolutely okay with how it's going. So, I was just wondering, he will coming to visit me at my own place (I live near my uni campus), and like we've made up before and stuff and the last time he came, I had like an instinct that he might've taken it further to sex but couldn't due to my period. (Im not a virgin, I've only done with my ex).

So this coming visit, there is a chance that it might go up to sex but I'm not too sure at the same time. Should I get condoms ready or should I let him bring them himself? like cuz I know there's the issue with sizes and personal preferences and such. He's a virgin, so that makes me wonder if I should be ready with condoms....

Also, living in a country where it is almost like a taboo to talk about sex and buying condoms in front of people... How should I go about it to buy them? I really hate judgemental looks from people when I'm just trying to stay safe. It's not like the UK or US where people don't judge you for having sex and buying protection, over here, it's like people would just give you looks.

Ok go buy them yourself. Go online and make sure they have condoms then go in that section grab them and by 1-2 other things to cover it up and pay and leave. Then keep them near your bed. NOT ON YOUR BED LIKE UNDER YOUR PILLOW! That will make it seem like you just wanted sex so in a drawer is best. Then just let it happen don't beg for sex though. And be careful remember you've done that before he hasn't!

Anonymous 123 agony auntSweetie what would you rather have? Isn't it better to have a "weird look" now than all the judgemental looks and shock and horror if God forbid you have to have an abortion? Or the morbid fear of trying to tell your parents that you're pregnant?

Take the weird looks now. It'll only be momentary anyway. Go to a store where no one knows you and just buy the condoms. Be safe, be safe, be safe.

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (3 January 2018):

YouWish agony auntThere was a crazy 80s movie called Amazon Women on the Moon that had a segment in it about a virgin buying the fictional Titan condoms for the first time, and it was all about the looks people gave him when he bought them. He was trying to be discreet, and he found out that he was the 1 millionth buyer and they made a huge fuss over his purchase and plastered his picture on the largest billboard in town. Cracks me up every time!

I'll get Modsmacked to hell if I post the direct Youtube link, but do a search of "Titan Man" and feel much better about your purchase!

Seriously. The only looks you'll get are approving ones because you are protecting yourself and society from STI and protecting yourself from unplanned pregnancy. The First Rule of Sexual Activity is to protect yourself! Never rely on anyone else. Get some condoms. If you have seen how big he is in person, you can approximate the size. Otherwise, you might want a couple of different sizes.

Good luck!

Personally speaking if I had met a girl and found out she carried condomes in her purse I would take a dim view of her and think she is a loose girl. Of course I am passed my dating years long ago but in those years it was the man who provided his condomes but it seems the times have changed over the years. I still say that if he has sex on his mind when he meets you he will have his condomes ready in his pocket even if he was a virgin. That is what most men still do I think. If he doesnt take his precautions himself he is not ready for sex yet in my opinion.

If you're courageous enough to be sexually-active; be proud and courageous enough to protect yourself.

If you have a steady boyfriend, people are assuming your having sex whether are or are not. So have him go to the pharmacy or convenience store with him and let him purchase them. Then you will know he always has some! If he's out, there should be no sex. It's equally his responsibility to protect the both of you!

Imagine the look on your parents' faces if the pregnancy stick says "pregnant!"

How about the look on the face of a healthcare professional telling you you're infected with gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, a yeast infection...or horror upon horrors, you're positive for HIV???!!!

You're a smart girl. If you're going to be sexually-active, be adult enough to purchase condoms in spite of the looks! If people are in that isle, they're purchasing personal items as well!

A female reader, mystiquek United States + , writes (2 January 2018):

mystiquek agony auntWhy not do as honeypie suggested and go to a pharmacy that is further away from where you usually shop? Its less likely that you will run into people that you know. Just to put things into perspective....if you are worried about what kind of looks people will give you for buying condoms, then think about what kind of looks you will get if you accidentally get pregnant? People will think what they want to think regardless..keep yourself safe and keep yourself from an unwanted pregnancy.

N91 agony auntAs honeypie said, would you prefer an std or a child over a funny look?

If you have internet access you can buy condoms online at amazon or eBay.

Can you buy them online from a reputable company or get them from your doctor? Or buy one from a vending machine in a toilet? These are options in the UK but im not sure about in the USA.

Honeypie agony auntJust go to a pharmacy away from where you normally shop. Trust me you MIGHT get looks from strangers but SO what? It beats getting pregnant or getting STD's, right?

People might look at you for buy red lipstick or blue hair dye, so what?

You got to live your life. And trust me, they might think OH MY~! but 5 minutes later they have forgotten it and move on to something else.
