A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I have been looking for a part time job for over a year now and now need one more then ever as I don't have a job anymore due to the café I worked at closing as a result of lease expiry and other issues .

I had been quite happy working in a café and I am looking for something of the same nature , I have had 4 interviews up to now and didn't get any of them and I have another one on Tuesday .

The thought of getting a new job even if it just working in a different café realty excites me but the only problems I have to overcome is my confidence and getting better with interviews . When I worked in the café I was really slow at taking orders ,making drinks and just everything really like remembering food orders and interacting with the customers in which I usually tend to use my sense of humour to cover up my shyness . Although I would like to work in another café I'm just wanting help and advice on getting better and quicker at making drinks , talking to customers etc as I struggled to get the milk frothy for cappuccinos and to separate the coffee in a latte and overall just knowing how to work at a faster pace during busy periods

My interview on Tuesday is also for a café/gelato/restaurant and It would be good if I got it and I'm just wanting advice on how to get better at answering questions in the interview like , tell me about yourself , why do you want to work for us , how would you deal with a difficult customer , do you have questions to ask . Also if I get the job advice on getting to know my colleagues would be great .

aunt honesty agony auntIs it possible to contact the last four interviews and thank them for there time and ask them if it is possible the could give you some structured feedback to help you with future interviews. That would be a great start. Then it is important to do research and practice interview questions. Do dummy interviews with friends or family who you know will be completely honest with you. A few tips on interviews is never to talk about money, don't share your bad points and try and talk yourself up as much as you can. It is good to add some humour and smiles as well if it is for a customer based job. We all have confidence issues we just need to work harder to improve ourselves. It is good that something new is exciting for you and even practice in front of a mirror on your confidence and remember that any employer should be glad to have you on there team. When you talk about your last job you point out all your bad points and none of the good. You need to focus on what you done good at your last job. If you are slow at taking orders then try to speed it up a little bit as people loose patience when they are hungry. If you struggle with making drinks, practice at home until you feel more confident. If you struggle to remember food orders then always write it down. It is okay to be shy and it is great that you have a sense of humour to over come that. That is a positive tool that you should always use, and always remember to smile and ask them are they having a nice day. If you struggled with making coffees then maybe you should ask someone to show you there skills. At the last job did you ever ask for help from a member of staff? It is okay to ask for help if you are struggling. Working at a faster pace will come with time. Just move your legs quicker, get in to a routine and be friendly. Tell me about yourself? Well tell them about how you loved working in the last cafe but it closed down, you are keen and eager to get working again, talk about your hobbies and interests. Why do you want to work for us? You love working in this industry and you are a hard worker and keen learner and you would be a great employee. You would make a difference to there staff as you are a good team worker, your friendly and you have experience. How would you deal with a difficult customer? Well you would be friendly and apologetic and try and ensure that they are happy before they leave, you would listen to there issues and try and resolve them to the best off your ability. However if someone was showing agression or being abusive you would go to the manager to report it. Do you have any questions to ask? Here I would do some research on the business and ask questions based on that so for example if you see they have been opened since 2009 you can show you done your research by asking a question like has business been good since 2009, have they saw an improvement, have the been there since it opened. Never ask about money, breaks time off ect. That can all be discussed once the job is offered to you.

My first advice would be to ask for feedback from previous interviews. Even though you did not get the job they can be really useful to ask the employee why and what you could do better. This gives you a starting point.

I also find interviews very nerve wracking and find it best to have something nearby which I can look at to spur me on when answering questions. For a recent job I thought of previous invertview questions and looked online as well as asking for suggested questions (from people who had previously applied for the same job). I then used these to make a mind map on the website go conquer. Just having the mind map near helped and I glanced at it when I had a blank moment!

When working in a cafe I think being honest with customers help, tell them your new and learning, people have said that to me before and it helps to know so you can reassure them! Deep breathes, take your time and concentrate.

Good luck and I hope you do well!
