A reader, anonymous, writes (11 February 2007):

id just like to clarify, that some doctors prescribe taking the pill coninuously for 3 'cycles' meaning that in this case it would stop a perioud ie 4 periouds a year.

but this is only in special cases, for medical reasons.

A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom + , writes (10 February 2007):

cd206 agony auntOkay, this is the way the pill works. First of all it thickens up your cervix so it's more difficult for the sperm to swim through. The other thing is does is releases hormones so that your body doesn't release an egg each month. However, your body still prepares for that egg that isn't coming so you still have a period exactly the same way as before, but during a set seven day period, ie you take the pill for 21 days and then during your 7 day break you bleed. Then you start taking it again. The pill can mess up your system for up to six months after you stop taking it so that you might not conceive in the first six months after you stop taking it but it won't stop you conceiving long term. In answer to your follow up you start taking the pill on the first day of your period when you take it for the first time. Hope this answers all your questions.

melschatbox agony auntNo, it doesn't affect your ability to conceive in later years. It doesn't STOP your period, it only temporarily stops ovulation.

Here's a website than can inform you further:

P.S. Your first visit to a gynecologist can be very informative and you should get your questions answered.

As long as you stop the pill when you try for kids you can get pregnant. Taking the pill doesn't stop you from ever having children, just when you are taking it. Hope that helps.
