 Whats wrong with your current idea? It is pretty cute.
What are his hobbies? Maybe you can get him something related to that. Guys usually like something practical, so if you can think of anything to get (even something very simple) that will make his life easier - he'll love it. Plus whenever he uses it he'll be reminded of you. :) You should definitely include the photo though, regardless what else you get.
