A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey

I am 14 and I have a very close friend of the family that has been convicted of a sex crime about a year ago. The girl on the internet was posing to be a 13 year old girl. The same age I was.

Anyway. I look at him as my brother. And I guess he looked at me as his sister. We did a lot together, like our family had a christmas tradition and he would come to my soccer games and stuff like that.

Some of the people at school have met him and then when they heard about what he had done they automatically sent me some stuff off of that perverted justicewebsite. I was thinking about writing to him in prison but after reading what he had written to that girl I just dont know if I can.

I mean Im not disowning him, he is still family. But I just dont know if I was to have a brother-sister relationship like we used to.

i just dont know if I should write or not. I dont even know what I should say to him.

I just need some direction to go.

Please give me any advice. I would be so gratful.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (17 June 2008):

I worked for a number of years in the correctional system and dealt with many sex offenders during that time. I would advise you to be very careful if you do. Many of them love to relive their crimes by talking about them. You could be feeding into his fantasies without even knowing it. He may have looked at you as more than a sister but just never got the opportunity to victimize you. He may have taken an interest in your life to get close to you for other motives. The fact that he is a known sex offender calls his motives into question. I would share your thoughts here with your parents, or an adult you trust, and listen to their advice.
