 Your most fertile period is 14 to 16 days after your first day of period.
This is the time when the ovary release the egg for fertilization.
The sperm can live inside those fallopian tubes from 3 to 7 days.
The guys must be there waiting for the lady or conception will not occur.
Every time you have unprotected sex , you run the risk of getting pregnant.
There are no safe periods. If anybody claims so , just disregard it and always practice safe sex.
I won't say it is a huge chance but the risk of getting pregnant is low but not impossible.

 I agree with Emilyanswers - if your friend is trying to get herself pregnant when her BF clearly is trying to avoid that...there is a big problem here. This is no way to bring a child into the world!Try to talk with her and get her to seek medical attention, and if possible psychological attention...she is obviously looking for something in her life and going about getting it in a really silly and selfish way...she is not thinking through the consequences of her actions right now and needs help to gain insight into what's going on for her! It's good she felt she could confide in you...tread a bit carefully with her, but see if you can get her some help before she gets herself into a situation that will have far reaching implications for the rest of her life! It sounds like that is what she wanted though which is a huge betrayal of trust between her and her boyfriend. He may not even believe it is his and want nothing to do with it till she has done a DNA test.
Talk to her now about it and see if she has realised how stupid she has been. If it was less than 72 hours ago then you can still get her the morning after pill from the chemist. I know it's a bank holiday but every town always has once chemist open 24 hours for emergencies like this.

reader, anonymous, writes (26 May 2008): This is verified as being by the original poster of the questionno it wasnt me. it was a friend who confided in me and i was stuck on what to tell her. she said that when she had sex with her boyfriend and he came (in the condom) that after he left she put it inside her the other way, (whatever that means)

what do you mean?
Do you mean you had sex with an old condom? Or you actually found a used condom and shoved it up there?
If it's either of the above then yes, you can get pregnant. There's not a huge chance but it could happen.
If it's within 3 days you can get the morning after pill so go to the duty chemist tonight and buy it, or see the doctor first thing tomorrow.
You might also want to get an STI test if you have been in contact with strange sperm.

The week leading to your period is probably the worst time to have sex.
I am not sure what you mean by sticking a condom with sperm in it inside you. In my minds eye I am imagining your partner finished and pulled the condom off and you put it back in...
If it was that he just came in the condom then i would think the chances are low. If any cum was inside you I would recommend the morning after pill.
