reader, anonymous, writes (31 October 2011): Because you aren't 18 yet, your parents have the right to file a law suit against the guy you are seeing. If you don't want him to get arrested, I would listen to your parents until you turn 18.
Secondly, you are still young at heart. Love may seem everything, but when you are 25 and he is 35, you will see things differently. Try not to act on your emotions too much. They are important but just make sure you reason logically as well.
Have you two talk about the different stages in life right now?

 The legal age in Indiana to have a sexual relationship is 16 therefore you are technically old enough to have a relationship with this man and there is nothing that your parents can do about it. They are only saying this to you to frighting you as they don't want you to be with this man, probably because he is so much older than you.
I am a firm believer that age is only a number and if you feel mature enough to be with this man well then this is your decision. But just make sure that he is not pressuring you in to anything or making you feel uncomfortable. I do wonder why a 26 year old man would want to be with a 17 year old. Your parents are obviously worried about this as well and they are only looking out for you because they love you so if you feel that you are mature and responsible the best thing to do is to sit down with them and talk to them in a mature way. Tell them how you feel about him and ask them for there blessing. But just be careful and be safe.
