A male United Kingdom age 16-17, Sir Whetty writes:

OK this may seem a bit stupid but I don't have a clue where to start because I'm not very good at English.

I want to write a love poem for someone who I love but they don't know yet. So where do I start? How to I write it?

Thanks

When I write, I always have a 'free thinking' spell. I get in a good place, when I am in an appropriate mood, for a love poem, I would write when feeling mushy, or after just having been with her.....you can carry a pen and paper with you for a week and write down all the thoughts you have about her, big or little, doesn't matter.

After a week, gather your notes and put them on the computer, where you'll have an easy time editing. From that point on, it's like putting together a puzzle. Look for themes, colors, feelings and group these. Then try to add rhyme. It should fall together easily at that point.....or better yet, share your thoughts here and let others play with the words to see what they come up with, you will be surprised how creative some people here are.

good luck, your girl is going to have a total melting and warm heart for you :-) What a nice way to tell her you love her.

lexilou agony auntMy hubbie always choses a card without a mushy verse and writes his own poem instead and I LOVE it.

Just dont be too mushy and declare your undying love for her as it may make her run a mile. Instead write it about her, about the things you like. Such as her smile, or the way her nose crinkles when she laughs or the colour of her hair, or the things she does and so on. x

2old4this agony auntFirst make a list of all the things you love about that person. Then just write a sentence or a paragraph of how that person makes you feel. Then go find a love poems web site and check out some of them to see how you might like to write yours out, you know, get ideas on the layout. Then using what you learned, arrange you thoughts and feelings into a poem similar to the ones you read. Don't exactly copy it, but similar. The good thing about poetry is that it is all individual. Whatever you write, if it comes from your heart in the right form, then its poetry.

A female reader, lotus mama808 United States +, writes (5 July 2008):

lotus mama808 agony auntStart by thinking of your inspiration. There are many types of poems, the Haiku, Diomante, etc. When I write poems, i just go with the flow. If it's just a love poem, it really doesnt have to be english correct. A man that can spell is very sexy to me, so make sure and have a dictonary with you. In poetry, make sure to capitalize every new line, even if it isn't the end of a sentance. It's just English correct. A good poem has a good variety of discriptive language, metephores and similies. Metephores are discribing something without using the words "like" or "as" and similies are discribing smething using the words "like" or "as": Her hair is LIKE the sun setting on the cool blue of the ocean. A metephore would sound like: Her hair is the sun setting on the cool blue of the ocean. Too often, people write poetry that has no disription, and it is bland, hard to understand, and boring. It can be as complex as need to be, but will be understood and loved when the reader can visualize it in their mind. Good luck, have fun with it, and if you want, when you are done, let me see it for an honest opinion! xx

look for insperation in poem books at home or go to your local library.

try not to go for stuff like roses are red, violets are blue, i swear to god, i love you. or anything, make up something original or look on the internet for ideas.

A reader, anonymous, writes (5 July 2008):

Seriously man, My best advice to you is to talk to her, forget the poem, why this???..... Because when most guys write a poem for a girl, and especially if the guy does not know the girl, then the girl just sees them as being pathetic. Once you know her well enough, you will see what she thinks is sweet, so its your choice man. Good Luck.
