A reader, anonymous, writes (24 February 2007):

A diet of beer and twinkies should do it! Just kidding, really it is all about calories consumed and calories expended through excercise...start keeping a log of how many calories a day you are consuming, and how much physical excercise you are getting....you may be eating much less than you realize...Do you smoke cigarettes? If you do, try quitting as this really lowers your sense of taste and smell and lowers your appetite.

Unless you are dangerously underweight, don't worry too much, you will gain those extra pounds as you age because your metabolism will be slowing.

The best thing to do is to do some strength training to build more muscle as muscle weighs more than fat...it is possible to be skinny and in poor physical shape.

Enjoy those beers and twinkies ( a disgusting sponge cake shaped in a tube and filled with extremely sugary white frosting substance, a USA delicacy, NOT)

A female reader, willywombat United Kingdom +, writes (24 February 2007):

willywombat agony auntAs you are in the UK you can go to see your GP and ask to be referred to a nutritionist, if they won't do this, then ask your GP for help. The very least they can do is to give you a diet sheet advising you what to take.

As well as cardio exercise you need to weight train as well. Ensure you are eating enough calories to meet you daily requirements which is approx 2,500 for a man. Don't make the mistake of going for fatty foods to put on weight as this is just plain unhealthy. Try lots of low fat carbs and PLENTY of protein.

As Dr John said before, there are LOADS of supplements out there you can take. Try a local health food store or chemist and ask them for advice as well. Many health food stores can supply 'bulking up' type protein drinks that body builders and other sportsman use.

I hope this helps a little. I don't really know a great deal about this subject other than in reverse (I am always trying to LOSE weight) but I am sure if you try to google this topic you will find more info.

Good luck.

xx

A male reader, Dr. John United States +, writes (24 February 2007):

Dr. John agony auntThere are lots of body building suppliments you can get that will help put on weight. Perhaps you could try that since you need to bulk up to put on muscle. Those kinds of things are high calorie drinks and things like that and I know of several that have had good success with that. Doc.
