Beware that he & his friends may have planned for you to hear that. It sounds a lot more like the game of a full-grown player to me.

 Not to be flippant, but is there anything wrong with asking him out first rather than waiting and wondering? You don't have to be blunt or direct -- just suggest an event or get tickets to something (other than anything sports related). If he says, no then move on to Plan B (the other love interest).
