A female reader, daidee1986 South Africa +, writes (16 February 2009):

Hey there

I have been having my period for over five years now, they have always been one or two days early or late and extremely heavy, but lately (for about 5 months now) i have been having two and sometimes three periods a month- it started in november 2008- I had my period from the 25th Nov- 2/3 Dec, then again from the 13th Dec until the 20th, then again a little one over new years, then started again on the tenth, and that lasted about a week. It has been happening like that ever since. Last week i had my period, and yesterday i started another one. I am very worried. I am not planning for a baby so my partner and I always use protection (though its hard to find time when im not ON!!!) Please could someone give me some advice!!!!

take care

xx

A female reader, Enzian Switzerland +, writes (8 January 2008):

Enzian agony auntHi ellie

You don't have to worry anything. It's perfect like this. If you would have started you period allready again in the beginning of January, this would be a thing to worry.

You allway start to count the days for your next period on the day you started your last one. It doesn't matter what happend before. So you started you last period on the 24th of December, you will start your next one 3 to 6 weeks after that, so that will be sometimes between the 14th January and 4th February. And as soon as you will start you next Period, you will start to count the weeks for the next one, never mind of what happend before. Allright?

If you have an other question, just ask again!

All the best, Enzian

A female reader, flyingtiger United States +, writes (26 December 2007):

Often, young teenage girls have irregular periods. This is especially true if you have just started having them. I had the same problem you're having when I was around 15. In my case, I was regularly having periods every two or three weeks. If you continue to have periods more than once every 28 days or so, you may want to mention it to your mom or doctor. In my case, I told my mom, who then called her doctor, who prescribed me birth control pills to regulate my period. If you continue to have this problem and are healthy and have no other problems and are not sexually active, a doctor may be willing to prescribe you birth control without requiring an exam. Taking birth control is really not bad at all. In fact, it's actually convenient. You always know when you will start your period, so there are no surprises, and your periods are less heavy and less painful. My suggestion is to not worry about it this month, but if you continue to have periods too often, talk to your mom or to your doctor.

A female reader, Enzian Switzerland +, writes (25 December 2007):

Enzian agony auntHi ellie

I think you are fine and you don't have to worry about this.

I once asked my gynaecologist about this and she told me that everything between 3 and 6 weeks is ok. So if you start your period on the 3rd on a month and 21 days later you start the next (which would be on the 24nd), this would be alright.

So don't worry. It is very normal at your age, that your period will not be regular every time. But if you would start your next period allready 14 days later (so you start one on the 3rd and the next on the 17th), something is strange. And also if you miss one (if you would have the next period 8 ore more weeks after the last), you would have a clarification. But you are only one week early, which is ok. But if you are not sure and if it happens very often, you can go to see a gynaecologist if you like, just to be certain that everything if fine.

greetings, Enzian

A female reader, leyan New Zealand +, writes (25 December 2007):

leyan agony auntHi Ellie,

It's perfectly normal, I have mine every 3 weeks, so yes it can be twice in one month, which is the same as in your case now, so not to worry, unless you might have had un protected sex, which in your case I hope not, as you are still young, but in that case it might be spotting, so if the period lasts only a day or 2 get a pregnancy test, or better see your doctor.

All the best.
