A female Zimbabwe age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I have resorted to getting drunk because it makes me smile a little which is better than how I feel depressed all the time! I get depressed when my drink is finished and I start to get sober.

I am sad because I am lonely, I thought that I could find someone but all the guys that like me live far away! I am a teenager of 14... a girl, I am so depressed!

Dr. John agony auntHi sugar,

Please take this to heart.

Drinking is never ever the answer and as I have seen many times it can ruin your life.

There are going to be bumps and bruises you get from living life and agreed sometimes you need something to help you get through it.

My advice though is to see a doctor or councelor who can put you on anti-depressants under controlled circumstances. In this way you supress the depression without losing your mental faculties and you can in turn make better decisions until you can be taken back off the anti-depressants.

Sometimes that is all you need to get through this kind of situation. You will in turn feel better about yourself and things will go better all the way around.

Now go do the right thing and feel better. Doc.

hlskitten agony auntHi there,

Thats not good sweetie. I know what you mean, boredom sets in so you have a few bevvies. Its not unusual. But that bottle of drink isnt the friend that you are pinng for so much. Its not even a close substitute for human contact.

Do you not hang out with mates near you?

The internet is alright, but not as a complete social life. Unless you bump into people that live local on the net and thats not very likely.

You need to be getting out there and mixing with people your age.

When i was 14 i have to admit, we did drink every friday and saturday night, stupid amounts too. Outside at the park. It was more a social thing, but the hangovers were horrendous! I didnt actually drink between the age of 20 and 30. I didnt like the taste of it. Not even at xmas.

I got into it again when i split with the kids dad at 30 but never to the extent i did as a teen.

It would be good if you can try and build up a social life with people near you. Who do you hang round with at school? Noone there you get on well enough with?

The guy thing will happen soon enough i bet you. But only if you're out there mixing with people.

Im sure you deserve more than a net relationship.

Wish i could suggest more really. I think when you start working you will meet loads of new people and will be out on the town lots.

Hang on in there.

C xxxxx
