I drive myself crazy with guilt. Can I fix this?

Guilt is running my life and driving me crazy! I work very hard at college and it really means a lot to me. But if I can't get there for some reason or I'm ill and can't do the work I said I would, I feel guilty for days until I've done something to ease the guilt!

It's really driving me mad! It's not just about college either, it's all aspects of my life. The other day I said a butterfly that flew by wasn't as cute as another one that just had and I felt guilty for ages! It's real madness, why am I doing this?

I know I must sound like a right mad woman but I want to work out why I feel so guilty all the time and why I expect so much of myself. I'm 21 and take college very seriously but I need to learn to give myself a break, as all these things are out of my hands and I couldn't have done anything about them if I wanted to! Please help.

You remind me of a friend of mine who is a lovely person but has this same guilt about lots of things. I remember she once commented that she found it hard watching a football game because she felt guilty supporting one side rather than the other. I don't know what could be the source of this but I think a counsellor would be a good place to start. Do speak to someone as it's making you unhappy. Good luck.
