I didn't go to my prom as I didn't have a date!

has anyone ever been to a prom without a date or in a limo. Well that would have been the case for me. All of my friends had dates except me and by the time I asked if there was any space in 1 of the 2 limos my friends got, there wasn't. Because of this pressure to obtain these 2 things I never went to my prom in the end (I live in the UK so not as hyped up as in US) and I think I might be regretting it now.

I totally agree with Bev, the things that seem so Big at school cease to have any meaning after you've left. You feel bad now, but it's done and won't change so focus on future events and good luck with those!

I went to my prom without a date. In fact, my whole circle of girlfriends did, even the two that had boyfriends. They decided to just meet their boys at the dance instead. It was more like a 'girls' night out' for us. The six of us girls hired our own limo, those old enough to drink (18 in Australia) had champagne, we got ready at my place - did each others' hair and make up, took loads of photos, we couldn't really give a toss whether we had dates or not, we just wanted to have fun. Some of the boys did that too, just went in a group of lads, and met the gils at the dance when they arrived. A lot of people didn't actually have dates, but then I guess the prom isn't as big a deal in Australia as it is in other countries.

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (6 August 2006):

Bev Conolly agony auntOnce you're out of school for good, you'll see that the whole "prom night" experience is a big toss. (Excuse my crudity.)

I didn't go to mine either, although in my case I was in a typically-adolescent negative mood and I was "protesting the objectification of women" or some such thing. The reason I chose not to go is lost in the mists of Time. Anyway, it was a big deal to me at the time to make a Statement, so I made a point of boycotting the prom.

Do I regret missing it? Not a bit. In fact, the topic has never come up in the entire three intervening decades. In my adult life, I've never met a single person who even mentioned their school prom to me in a conversation. I've never seen anyone's prom photo. I never heard of a couple who went to the prom and later married.

In other words, the prom is only important because high school students are *told* it's important.

Once high school is over you'll find that your real life is such that you rarely even think about school days, except when you see someone from your class.

Try not to build this one incident up in your mind too much, because your life will move on, and you'll find that this one event is nothing vital to your personal or social development.

And if push comes to shove and for some reason there's pressure on you to conform with a group who *did* go to theirs, fib and say you went. Who's going to know or care in years to come? You can always claim that you stayed near the back and helped serve refreshments!
