A male reader, anonymous, writes (15 March 2007):

(smile) Well, Dr. Psych had a pretty good answer. She had the physiology basically right. Sexual experiences or thoughts can cause them. Sometimes, in early puberty, it just seems to happen for no reason. But that is rare. And everyone, males and females alike, have "tumescence" of the "bits" during regular sleep cycles and at odd times during waking. It is just nature's way of keeping everything working properly. It should not cause anyone concern. There are varying degrees of "erection". With the type of underwear most young blokes wear today most are never noticeable, though some may feel they are. This can cause undue concern or shyness. (lol) As to the touching or "moving it about", I think you may be aware that some do, on occasion. (You must also have noticed many girls adjusting "wedgies"...same thing). But, I would say that most do not. At least not when they think they are being watched. (call me, "older bloke")

DrPsych agony auntHow do you know when guys have them?...well they try to desperately hide the fact in public if they are feeling embarrassed about it. Sometimes you can see through clothing but not always, and it is perhaps not the healthiest way to start a relationship by staring at someone's trousers! In private with girls they like they are rather less shy about hiding their erections.

They "feel it and move it around" because from time to time it can get really really itchy.

camille agony auntErections are caused by blood rushing to the penis and it engorges. It commonly occurs when sexually aroused but that's not it's only appearance. It can happen during inactive periods (sleep) and at any time especially when young. You know when someone has one because the penis becomes hard and sticks out/up. When you see boys touching it, they're just scratching, or as you say, moving it. I don't know any man that doesn't, but there's nothing more to add to that, they're just getting comfortable! Don't worry about any of this.
