I am 16, and I am really confused. My last period started January 5th, and I havent gotten one since. There is no possible way I could be pregnant, I am a virgin. What is going on with my body? It is really starting to worry me that I have missed a period, and it seems to be heading in the direction of missing another. Please give me an ideas as to what you think this could be caused by. Thank you so much.

I have done some googling, and there are a few different ways to induce it with herbs and things. Parsley Tea is supposed to work well, as well as high amounts of vitamin C. Ginger is said to work too. Excersize such as situps work for most women as well, so I am trying those. If it doesnt induce my period, I will at least get killer abs!

Thank you for the advice, it is quite helpful. My grandpa is doing better now, and the stress is getting better to, so I am thinking I should be fine. If not, I will head to a clinic for some help. Thank you so much for all the advice.

fi_the_tree agony auntHmmmmm, well if you have been having periods for a long time and they have suddenly stopped, then it may very well just be down to stress, seeing as there's no contraceptive hormones in the way.

Sorry to hear that you have family in hospital by the way, your whole family must be under alot of pressure right now. I don't think there is a way to induce a period as such, but i seriously suggest that you find a gynecologist, even if it's just to have a chat about your situation right now. They will be able to give you the best advice. Ask your mum to help you if you're not sure what to do.

It's very important that you get your sexual health checked out regularly. I don't know how it works in Canada, but here in the UK women have a cervical smear every 3 years until they are 35 i think, then every 5 years after that. This is to check for cervical cancer and can also alert to any STI's you may have (i know this isn't a problem for you now, but it will be once you become sexually active)

If you leave it too, late, and there is a problem, then you could end up coming off worse because of it.

I have been to see a doctor for other things, like when I broke my finger and such, but none of the doctors in my city are taking any new patients. I dont even know where to look for a gynecologist, and I was planning on looking into it when I move out at the end of school next year. I dont plan on having sex before then, so I figured it was alright to wait on that... Also, forgot to answer the contraceptive pill question, which is a no, I do not take any.

fi_the_tree agony auntWait, you don't have a family doctor? And you've never been to see a Gynaecologist??? You need to seriously start thinking about getting your health into check!!! Go and sign up at your doctors office, you need something in place should you ever fall ill. It's the same with your sexual health too, get it sorted!!!

I started getting around 3 years ago, and I have been decently stressed with my expected period falling nicely in the week where 4 major projects were due, plus an interview for TV. Since then it hasnt gotten much better, as my grandpa is in the hospital, and my grandma has been staying with us for 3 weeks as of tomorrow. Tonnes of family have been over, and so it has been quite... stressful is a good word. But it should be getting better. I have never seen a gynecologist, and Im not really sure my mom does either. I dont even have a regular family doctor. Is there any way to induce my period in other ways than a pill from a doctor?

Thanks so much for your answers already though. They have been quite helpful, and it is google time!

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (21 March 2011):

DrPsych agony auntYou are not pregnant as you haven't been sexually active with anyone. There are very many hormonal reasons for a loss of periods. For a start it is not too unusual to miss a few at your age as your cycles are probably still settling into place. However, if you do miss more periods then see a doctor. It is important not to let the lining of your womb build up too long. The doctor can give you tablets to induce a period if you haven't had one for a while. A doctor may also wish to take some blood from you to identify if there is a hormonal cause such as polycystic ovaries. It could also be due to stress or changes in diet or lifestyle.

fi_the_tree agony auntDo you take any medication or contraceptive pills? This might be why. How long have you had your periods? Sometimes the body takes a while to settle into a routine if you have just started having them.

But if you're really worried, go and see the doctor. I'm sure everything is fine hun, but go and get checked out for your peace of mind :)
