k_c100 agony auntWell I'm not sure if your grades you mentioned are at GCSE or A Level (AS Level if you only managed a year). If you got D's and E's at GCSE then you really will struggle, you need at least a C in maths and english to get any sort of job. So if you havent already got this then you have to re-take your GCSE's, it is important to get at least a C in both key subjects. You dont have to go back to school for this, most colleges have adult GCSE courses that you can do.

If the grades are related to your AS levels, then you have 2 options. First option is you learn from your mistakes and you go back to sixth form and try harder next time. This would be my recommended course of action for you - you will really struggle in the recession to get a job with just GSCE's. I have lots of friends who left school at 18 with average A Level grades (mostly C's and B's) and they are all now doing pretty well (they are 22). One is working for the council, another in sales at a hotel and the other working in a branch of HSBC. But they only got these jobs because they had A Levels, GSCE's would not have been enough.

If you really cant bear to go back to school then your second option is to leave your attempts at A Levels off your CV (it looks very bad to employers that you gave up half way through - not a sign that you are committed or motivated). Only put your GSCE grades on there, and then any work experience you have. If you havent had a job before, then you have to be prepared to do some pretty rubbish part time work (or full time if you are lucky enough to get it). Like working in a shop, working in a resturant, take-away shop.... all these jobs are pretty easy to get regardless of your grades. You could try applying for admin jobs (like at the local council, NHS etc) but you will be up against tough competion, most graduates from uni cannot get jobs at the moment so they are going for these admin jobs too.

I really do think you should try again at sixth form/college, it will make such a huge difference for your future. Start again from the bottom - do your first year of AS Levels again and get decent grades. Make sure you know where you went wrong last time - was it the subjects you chose? Was it the particular sixth form you went to? Learn from your mistakes and do things differently next time!

I hope this helps and good luck!

You can still get into university with D's and E's just depends which one you want to go to.

I went to sixth form and got D and two E's and am in my first year doing criminology. Anything is possible!

Maybe go back to college? Hope this could have been some use to you.

Ok, I know exactly what you mean. I finished school with a few D grades, and I got half way through my first year of college and dropped it as I couldn't see myself being stuck in front of a computer in a sweaty office all day. And now I'm looking for a job before I go onto another course in September.

Anyway, as for the advise - to make your CV look better, you should maybe seek out some voluntary work; it's not like you get cash but your CV will look better to the employer. Also, you should maybe try to go college or another 6th from and study A - levels or retake your GCSE's.

Much love and do be sure to send me a private message if you need some more advise on the subject x
