A female reader, Hopeful +, writes (2 June 2006):

Hopeful agony auntAsk her questions - find out something that she is interested in or knows about or does and ask her.

Ask her about her school, her friends, hobbies, after school activities, part time work, family, holidays etc...people feel most comfortable talking about themselves so if you tap into this, you should be right!

In addition to this, these types of questions allow for you to add things or for her to ask questions back. This will help the conversation flow naturally and you will learn tonnes about each other in the process.

Make sure you listen to her answers because there may be follow up questions you can answer or things she says that you can remember for next time (ie, if she says she is going to the movies with her friend, you can ask her next time "did you enjoy the movie?" etc) - people like it if other people listen to them and take notice of what they are saying.

Hope this helps a little!
