A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My friend is 19 and has been taking the pill to make her breasts bigger. I thought this was a stupid idea since the pill doesn't do that and she isn't sexually active, so why bother?

However, she has been taking it and they have gotten bigger because she used to be quite small but now it's obvious she isn't. She even said her skin has gotten better from being on it!

So my question is, how did they pill make her breasts grow bigger? I thought that was all a myth? Also, isn't true that when she does become sexually active that the pill won't work for her and will in fact be useless, since she took it when she wasn't haven't sex at all?

I'm just confused about how the pill and all this stuff works!?

Honeypie agony aunt1. she gained a little weight and/or the swelling from the progesterone. (some women also seem to retain more water when on the pill).

2. And no, the pill will work JUST fine if she takes them as directed, whether she has had sex or not.

Realitycheck agony auntThe pill can make a woman gain a few poundsn(maybe 5 or 10 lbs.) but I took the pill for years and I can tell you it never made my breasts any bigger and god knows I would have doubled the dosage if it had (just kidding, that wouldn't be safe). Look closely at the women in her family (mother, sisters etc). What do their bodies tell you about the overall genetics of her family? Do the women in her family generally have larger boobs, if so she just came into her own sooner than you did. Also, don't rule out the possibility that she's wearing a padded push up bra which works for wonders for anyone's breasts. The pill will protect her against pregnancy only if she's taking it daily while she is sexually active. It does not work if she took it 3 months ago, stopped taking it, and then started having sex.

celtic_tiger agony auntBigger breasts are a known side effect of taking the pill. You can often grow a cup size or more, and like person12345 says, its down to swelling rather than 'growth' of new tissue.......

The pill works regardless of if you are having sex or not.

Basically, it contains certain hormones, which trick your body into thinking you are pregnant. This stops you releasing an egg, thus you wont get pregnant. The monthly 'bleed' you get on the pill is NOT a period. It is a withdrawal bleed from not taking the hormones.

The contraceptive pill has many side effects, which is why it is prescribed, and you have to be checked over before you use it. There are many different brands, and every woman reacts differently. What works for one woman, will make another one violently sick.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (13 March 2012):

person12345 agony auntIt doesn't add more breast tissue, that doesn't change. But the hormones cause breasts to swell, the same as they can right before your period. Breast swelling/tenderness is a common side effect of being on the pill, as is clearer skin, though not all women experience it. Progesterone can cause breast tissue swelling, this is why breasts sometimes swell around a woman's period.

The pill does not change how effective over time, regardless of whether she is or isn't having sex. I don't see how having or not having sex could possibly impact your hormones.

The pill basically works by overpowering your body's natural hormones to in essence trick your body into thinking it's pregnant so it won't release an egg. Here's a website to help you:

A female reader, AuntyAlexxmo United Kingdom +, writes (13 March 2012):

AuntyAlexxmo agony auntThe pill CAN increase breast size in a small number of people, due to the way it affect the hormone production, it can help skin in some people and cause spots in others.

Taking the pill with the sole aim of large breast is just daft, it does not happen to all people and also is not perminant
