How can I safely cut my addiction to (well known brand) coffee and become healthier?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I attend university classes 4 days a week.

On those days I wake up at about 8:30am. I always grab a tall cup of X Brand Coffee. I have always limited myself to the "tall" size and I only drink latte, mocha, frappuccino, or black tea latte, all of which are about 75-95mg in caffeine.

The thing is, I feel sleepy on weekends despite waking up at 12:00 (I don't allow myself caffeine).

Luckily I quit my job recently so I can sleep earlier. Therefore right now is the perfect time to kick my X Brand coffee routine.

I don't think I can do it in one go and fall asleep in class so I have thought of a few things. One is to switch to only drinking black tea latte (black tea with milk) and cutting out coffee. I feel that coffee is milder on the stomach but I'm not an expert, and it still has the same amount of caffeine. But I'm definitely cutting out frappuccinos and whipped cream, and asking for only fat free milk, for my health. I have not beeing eating properly these days and I want to cut out unnecessary fatty foods in general.

I have also "hired" my kineisiology major buddy to be my personal trainer (she has spending problems so I'm her "accountant") and watch what I eat and make sure I exercise a little. I know caffeine is part of my addiction (if I can call it that), but I genuinely love the flavor of the drinks. I love sweet things in the mornings.

Any advice? Thank you.

Ciar agony auntAll things in moderation (well maybe not ALL things) is a pretty good rule of thumb to live by.

There is no reason to cut out your coffee intake entirely, but cut down. If you eat well, exercise and live a happy, simple life, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to enjoy a latte or something nice in the morning. Maybe just have a smaller size.

Many of the oldest people on earth smoked, drank, ate canned and packaged foods, and used leaded gas in their cars. Obviously it wasn't tofu, Yoga, organic vegetables, and bottled water that kept them alive and healthy all these years.

When you help your friend with her personal accounting, you're not going to suggest she only spend money on absolute necessities. She's certainly going to want to treat herself to some luxuries now and then, yes? Apply the same philosophy to your diet.

Life is supposed to be enjoyed.

Coffee isn't really bad for you as long as you use it in moderation and don't drink it late in the day. If you need it to enhance alertness and use it as a study aid You could buy a coffee maker (most cost $10-$15) and brew your own coffee at home. This will allow you to control the strength of the brew, AND how much sugar/milk you consume as well. Many coffee makers come with a feature that will allow you to set a time for the coffee to start brewing so it is ready to drink when you need it.

Most of the well known coffee brands can now be purchased at grocery stores. I know that walmart and publix carry folgers, starbucks, dunkin donuts, seattle's best, 8'oclock, community coffee, caribou coffee, and gevalia brands. Publix (if you live in the south eastern US) has Barnie's coffee as well many lesser known brands that are 'sustainable' and/or 'organically' grown.

If you decide to brew coffee at home, you can even use some of the spent grounds (once they've cooled of course) as part of your beauty routine as a skin exfoliant! I use mine on my legs a couple of days a week because it helps me retain less water, and removes dry skin. I do have to offer a bit of caution though as this process is a bit messy and the grounds can stain the bathtub if the surface is worn.

The best way to get healthy is to begin an exercise program and consciously choose a varied and healthy diet. You need to make sure you eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh spinach is an excellent green leaf to consume in salad (we usually have a fresh spinach and tomato salad with reduced fat feta cheese, grilled chicken or steak, and balsamic vinagrette for lunch or dinner two days per week), or added to a pasta dish. Be wary of fresh corn (it has been bred for sweetness and now contains a lot of sugar) and iceburg lettuce which has little nutrient value. When purchasing tomatoes, (this may seem weird but) you want to smell them. If they are pink, hard and do not have a fresh acidic tomato-viney scent, they are underripe and won't taste good. You should select red, firm, tomatoes that have a nice aroma.

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntMy Mother... who enjoyed a healthy life for 94 years... had a smart belief in how one should determine what they put in to their body..... She said, "All things in moderation...."

Having lived, now, for quite some few years, myself... I can assure you that we (all) will continue to see all manner of literature/publicity about those foods and indulgences which will: 1. Kill us, or 2. Make us live forever.... and the darndest thing is that some foods go back-and-forth between these lists... and WHO KNOWS what's REALLY going to kill us???? We have a young man (age 11), here in Florida, who was struck by lightening the other day... and he's in critical condition in a local hospital... Do you suppose if really made much difference if he had skim, or 1%, or whole milk on his Wheaties that day????

I think you are overthinking this matter....

Good luck... and study hard....

Lucky786 agony auntWater. Drink plenty of water. I used to drink 9 cups of coffee a day. I cut down to 3-4 by drinking more water which helped with the headaches I was experiencing.
