How can I get a new razor without having to ask my parents?

A male United States age 22-25, anonymous writes:

Hey, this is a bit awkward! I'm in desperate need of some help.

I'm a 15 year old guy, and I keep myself clean, grooming, etc. So, I shave. All places, and "down there" (if you catch my drift) is the problem. Well, not the shaving part, but the razor part.

My parents don't know I shave there, and I'd like to keep it that way, as it's VERY, VERY embarrassing. None of my family or friends know for that very reason.

I am in incredible need for new razors, because the one I'm using is 4 years old, and used to be my sister's that she left behind when she moved out. I understand the risk of using it, and that's why I need new ones. It's dull, rusty, old, and gross.

But the issue is that I have no money, no car, and no way to get the razors. So what do I do?

I don't have facial hair, so my parents would be curious as to why I would ask for razors.

I could walk to the nearby pharmacy, but I'd need money and a real reason to go. Not to mention it's too far that my parents would let me go alone.

Is there an alternative to get a close, GOOD shave? Or is there a way that I can acquire these razors without my parents knowing? They don't snoop around, so they wouldn't know about the razors. Which is good.

Please PLEASE help! Thank you any and all that can help me :)

Ive read your updates, whatever you do please stop using the eold razor. It isnt hygienic at all. Like chigirl suggested, take a blade at your friends house if necessary. But give the scissors and comb combination a go first, where you comb the hair in the opposite direction of hair growth and cut. It is a good way of making sure you dont cut your skin by mistake.

Why don't you save your lunch money and walk to the pharmacy after school and buy one? If your parents ask why you are home late you tell them you stayed after school helping with the toy drive or playing basketball with some classmates.

Christmas is coming up, ask Santa for some cash. Can't you tell your parents your going to go skateboarding or bike riding with a friend, then go to the pharmacy and buy your razors.

You said your parents don't notice much, could you steal one from their bathroom?

I feel like you have so many options.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (22 December 2014):

chigirl agony auntIf you just think it becomes too much, may I suggest you trim it with a pair of scissors instead? Shaving your public hair does not make you cleaner, and in fact shaving puts you at risk for getting cuts and an infection, especially seeing as you use such an old razor that will have loads of bacteria on it. Do clean it well.

I strongly suggest you stop shaving. If your public hairs make you feel unclean, then you should stop for a minute to think about why you have such thoughts. They are harmful to your self image. Your pubic hair is a perfectly normal part of your body, and you need to accept that. If you want to keep things in check down there, just trim the hairs with scissors.

I would, if I were you, talk to your dad about wanting to have razors or a shaving machine, because you want to start shaving. If he says no, you don't have any facial hair yet, tell him it's for practice/for when the time comes. Alternatively ask for an allowance. You're of the age where you need to learn how to manage your own money. Or get a job. There are usually tons of things teenagers can do, first and foremost they babysit for pocket money. Or cut grass. Just saying, get creative. At least get a summer job.

Oh, but if you're really sneaky and can get away with it, just go through the cabinets at your own home/at your friend's home and take a razor blade. Razor blades are the type of thing no one realizes they used up, unless there's only one or two left.

No, I have no money because I'm too young to work and my parents can't pay me because we're too poor :/ once in a while I have two or three dollars, and my dad laughs because it's more than he has.

I have no allowance, I can't borrow money, and there's never any chores to do that could pay me because I'm (more or less) forced to do them anyway.

I know it isn't necessary, it's definitely a personal choice. It makes me feel cleaner, I guess.

I shower every day, so it isn't a problem of hygiene.

I'm not sexually active either, so as I said, it's personal.

I don't shave every day, I only shave when I feel like it's out of control. Every few months usually.

First of all, it seems you need a few bucks to outfit yourself for this shaving charade. Having leaped that hurtle, I suggest you get a Mach III by Gillette, Gillette Foamy and a small jar of Vaseline. Of course you will need hot water, a washcloth and a good bath soap, I recommend, Dial. And, let me hasten to add, I have been at this shaving thing for many years, a little over four times the years you have lived. My situation is need, rather than fetish, or anything else.

As a small child I underwent major surgery on my abdomen and upper-inner thigh, big time serious surgery leaving a gross scar which tends to develop ingrown hairs and a nasty red irritation which will make my eyes water when touched it hurt so bad. So, I began shaving the hair right about your age. This was the only logical solution after several other measures, i.e., lotion, ointments, soaps and so on failed.

First I did just the scar side of the area, as my pubic hair thickened, however, the area looked downright silly, sort of like shaving half your head. Of course the area is private, but nevertheless, I saw it and it was repugnant to me.

Put yourself at ease, young man, many, many men shave their scrotum, penis and associated private areas. The feeling is pleasant with the hair removed and most women like it although I have always been a moral sort of guy and haven't shared this with a lot of women. Adding to that, is the ever present quite unsightly scar.

Best method for me is using the bathroom sink, the shower just does not allow for the proper attention to minor detail, that is, those few hair that always seem to dodge the razor blade, even three blades don't seem to get those little buggers. But, with the wash bowl nearby and the flow of water under control you can manage well.

I have found Vaseline is the best thing for me to use after shaving. just a little bit, like the size of two grains of rice will cover a large area with a very light coating. Plus, those little pesky pin hairs will cut easily using the razor over the Vaseline surface.

I shave at least every other day, sometimes everyday if need be. Too much shaving will irritate some people, so set your own pace. After a few months your pubic area will be as smooth as your face, even smoother.

Being short on cash shouldn't be a problem, try asking your parents' for a few bucks and if this fails, be careful with the old razor, the area you are shaving is delicate. Unlike your arms and face, the skin is not exposed to the elements, i.e., sun, wind, etc. and therefore tender.

One more thing, if you are doing this at home (I would imagine you are) it is better if your parents know what you are doing. The reason is this: you will feel far more at ease and take a little more time to do the job better and safer. My parents knew, approved and never gave it a thought when I was shaving. Granted, my situation was need which shed a little different light on the matter.

Good Luck!

Is there any supermarket near you? Here they sell razors in the supermarket, the cheap ones will cut you easier. You need to use shaving gel but if you have none then hair conditioner is an excellent alternative.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (22 December 2014):

Okay, start a conversation about shaving with your Dad. Ask him how old he was when he started shaving his chin/facial hair. Ask him if someone showed him how to and how he got razors. Ask him if he could show you how to do a proper facial shave - you may not have any facial hair yet but it will soon come and you can say that guys at school have started and you just feel a bit left out. If he's a nice Dad he will recognise that you just need to be shown what to do and will probably offer to get you some razors.

After that, it's up to you where you shave. The point is to just 'break the ice' and express a normal curiosity about this age old ritual.

But - why don't you have ANY money? Don't your parents give you any pocket money or couldn't you offer to do odd jobs - either for your parents or neighbours - wash cars, mow lawns, walk dogs etc to earn money? It does seem a little strange to be your age and not even have a small amount of money of your own. You could also ask your Dad's advice about this - did he do odd jobs at your age? How did he start earning money? Just ask him how he began and this will hopefully kick start a conversation about how you can get some money coming in.

Well I really don't see the need for that honesty! tbh having pubic hair is nothing to be embarrassed about! It is a sign of you growing up into a man! And if its girls that youre worried about.. well it actually doesn't bother girls as much. (depends though) for me, it doesn't. (I have a boyfriend and we're super honest about these things so yeah)

but if you really need a razor, well... if you have lunch money from your parents, save some of it for the razor and think of a way to tell your parents that you need to go to the pharmacy.

Just keep in mind that it is really unnecessary to shave your pubic hair.

A female reader, RubyBirtle United Kingdom +, writes (22 December 2014):

Why do you need to shave?? Hair removal doesn't make you any cleaner or more hygienic - after all, we don't shave our heads. Washing with soap and water should be sufficient. A fair amount of men DO shave their pubic hair off but it's a personal choice not a necessity.

In fact, using your sister's 4 year old razor is probably putting you at more risk than not shaving at all. So stop using it. Even if it means you have to stop shaving for the moment - nothing bad will happen if you let the hair grow again for a while.

There are other options to shaving but pretty much all of them would entail you making the trip to the pharmacy and having money to spend. And your purchases would raise more eyebrows than you buying a razor.

chigirl agony auntBefore I tell you how to go about this, you will have to exolain to me why removing your pubic hair is of such importance. Who is it that likes to look at you down there, and who prefers that you look like a child? If there is an adult around who you trust, then talk to them about your relationship with this someone who likes you to be shaved.

If there is no such person... Then tell me why there is a need to shave your pubic hair. Because I am concerned about you.

I know you're young. It's easiest to ask a friend's family member to buy them for you. They might be able to offer you a deal say wash dishes for them for one night. Then they might be able to buy you some razors. If you get allowance. get one of their family members to buy razors for you. Sometimesschools may even provide you with hygienic products if you need them desperately. Sometimes it's better to actually talk to your parents. Your father might even shave. A lot of women shave your mother might shave ask to see if she let you have one. If she asks why explain to her that you are uncomfortable with your body hair and you wish to stay smooth longer. Usually that will be enough for them to understand. They were once kids too they had to go through these things with their own parents.
