A female reader, mizzjazzy United Kingdom +, writes (22 December 2008):

I have the same problem!!!

my hair is past waist length now and my mum still wont let me cut it.

the hairstyle i want is medium length (just a bit longer than shoulder length) with some layers.

When my mum was younger she had extremelly long hair and says that when she had it cut she made a mess of it.

the whole point is that its my hair and i know the way i want it wont look horrible i am 14 for gods sake.

SHE IS DRIVING ME INSANE !!

i have an appointment on tuesday but i think she will do the same as the last appointment i had where she promised i could have it shorter but when we got there she made the hairdresser only take off the split ends at the very tip of my hair.

i need advice a.s.a.p as how i can make my mum let me have my hair as i want it !! please help :(

Basschick agony auntTry cutting it in stages. Lop off a few inches to begin with, wait a couple of weeks, then take off a few more inches, wait a couple more weeks, until you get the bob you're looking for - that way you can both get used to the new look without going through the shock of having it all disappear overnight.

A female reader, skye United Kingdom +, writes (20 August 2007):

skye agony auntYour mum is probably just worried that you will get upset when your hair is gone. Afterall you cant stick it all back on again.

Remind her that hair grows. Speak to her and calmly ask her to reconsider her decision. Tell her that while you like having long hair (sounds like you have had it for a long time) you want it to stay healthy and so a good cut into a long bob would be beneficial.

Perhaps your idea of a long bob is not hers. Agree to meet her halfway and promise that you will not ask to go any shorter than shoulder length for instance. Ask her to help you find the best shampoo and conditioning products for your new style, as well as some beautiful slides, combs and scrunchies. Show her that you are a sensible girl who has every intention of looking after your new hairstyle and perhaps she will agree to compromise with you.

If you do go shorter and discover your mum was right all along, remember... HAIR GROWS!

Good luck,

Skye
