hi,

straight to the point here. I had unprotected sex recently, mid cycle. My partner and i were using the withdrawel method, we have done this before, however, afterwards he was feeling a bit panoid, leading me now to be paranoid, he's not entirely sure he 'got out' in time. This happened at a time in my cycle when it would be easier to get pregnant. Really worried now. How reliable do you think the withdrawal method is? should i be concerned? thanks xx

to be honest i am 20 years old and i know better that the withdrawal method is not reliable. As the man still pre cums which in sum cases can cause you 2 still fall pregnant. To be honest if i was you i wouldn't not use the withdrawal i would use contraception and yes you could be pregnant

Yes you should be concerned. I hope you realise you've been very foolish and it's a suprise you haven't become pregnant already. Considering your age I would assume a couple to be more sensible and careful than this, but clearly I'm wrong.

If you're pregnant, then you're pregnant. You will have have to deal with the consequences of your actions. If you're not pregnant then I hope you learn a lesson from this scare, stop acting like teenagers when it comes to contreception and use proper protection.

Dextro69 agony auntIn is not a real method of contraception at all. NEVER use it as such.

whilst i have respect for all believes the the pope could stop millions of unwanted children been born each year by allowing Catholics can use a condom or the pill. (currently withdrawel method is all they use)

Condoms and the pill are FREE here in the uk just pop to your doctors or family planning centre. you normaly get between 6 and 12 condoms a time (1 weeks supply) but can get more if needed. they are only plain ones but you can pick up others in most supermarkets ect

Ponungalungb agony auntYou're in your mid to late 20's and you're using the "Withdrawal Method"? I can't believe what I read on this site. Anybody questioning the need for sex education in our schools should come on this site and read some of these letters. FYI, 1 drop of pre-ejaculatory fluid can contain thousands of sperm - quite enough to get you in a family way, long before he has shot his wad, so to speak.

Like others have said, if you're going to have sex, get a reliable birth control method.

The "morning after pill" may be the way to go for your current situation.

Good luck.

stina agony auntHi Anonymous,

In short, yes, you should be concerned. How recently did you two have sex? If it was in the last three days, go get the morning after pill! It will make you feel sick to your stomach, but it's either that or possibly becoming pregnant (which will make you sick to you stomach, and then some!)

Condoms are not expensive and neither are birth control pills, etc. Make yourself a doctor appointment and find out which method would work best for you - because the withdrawal method is crap.

Be safe! Take care.

kenny agony auntLike Harshbut fair says it is not a very reliable method atal. Sperm comes out of the penis before the male has ejaculated, know as pre-sperm. I would refrain from using this method, unless you are ready to start a family soon.

Good luck x

A male reader, harshbutfair United Kingdom +, writes (19 October 2007):

harshbutfair agony auntYou ask how reliable it is?

It's not reliable at all.

It's not a form of contraception. A penis has a mind of its own. It leaks amounts of sement constantly when erect which could cause pregnancy. And as you've discovered it doesn't always come "on demand".

If you don't want kids, please use a proper form of contraception like the pill.
