Im 15 and am VERY hairy, it is a genetic thing, now i can handle the hairy legs, arms, feet, hands, face but i have no idea what to do down there. Its very out of control, in the sense that it spreads, its not thick but its black and i cant wear bikinis because of it. I dont want to go get it waxed because thats embarrassing, shaving cause irritation and makes it grow out more and waxing myself scares me. Help?

Dear OP,

I agree with the others that if your growth of hair is really out of control, you might see a doctor about it.

If it's just a cosmetic problem and you neither want to shave nor wax, I could recommend trying one of those new IPL thingies.

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Precision-Removal-Attachment-Shipping/dp/B00E2QNO6K

IPL is quite expensive for a young person like you and requires you to shave before you use it, but it's supposed to work well on dark hair (my own body hair is almost to "blonde" so it only removed the hair in patches).

Maybe you could get a used one on ebay or you've got generous parents?

I agree that you're a little young to go to a waxing studio for full hair removal, yet, when you're older, you'll find that if you've got a nice professional waxing lady, it's way less embarrassing than one would think (although painful, for some moments). I sometimes remove everything down there by going to someone who does "sugaring", which is slightly different than waxing and is said to be somewhat less painful.. well. On the outlines of the bikini zone it won't hurt that much.. but in the middle.. ouch. Yet, I have to admit, I like it bald sometimes and after a while, the roots of the hair get weaker so it doesn't hurt as bad every time.

If you only want to remove the outline of the bikini zone, so that you will look alright in a bikini, that's easy to do yourself. I recommend cold wax stripes, because if you're like me, you'll make a mess of the bathroom by using hot wax, which will be sticking all over the place. You can then trim the rest of the hair with small scissors or a body hair trimmer.

Good luck!

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (9 March 2014):

CindyCares agony aunt How do you know your hirsutism is genetic ? have you been diagnosed by an endocrinologist ?

I doubt it, if you had seen one he would have given you prescriptions ( contraceptive pills , eflornithine, etc. ) to keep it under control and avoid it " spreads ", as you say. . Genetic does not mean it is untreatable,- even if it cannot be fully cured, there are many treatments that a goo d specialist can prescribe to lessen and manage your condition.

BUT, you might be hirsute because you have polycistic ovaries, or an hyperactive pituitary gland, or an excessive production of androgens due to several other pathological causes.

Definitely, look into that before heading to the beauty salon. Health comes before esthetics, at any age.

A female reader, like I see it United States +, writes (9 March 2014):

like I see it agony auntDefinitely have experience with this one as I got my dad's dark hair and am naturally quite hairy "for a woman." I know it feels awkward now but as you get older you'll probably feel a lot more matter-of-fact about it.

If you're just looking to be well-groomed for bikini season there is no need to go completely bare. You can wax around your bikini line (or have it done professionally) and just trim the rest so that it's short and neat, but not bald.

I've been waxed before (and done it myself too on occasion) and the pain honestly is not that bad around the bikini line. Going bare all over is a different story, and doing it myself? Ow. The only thing I expect to hurt worse in my lifetime is childbirth, haha.

In your shoes I would go get my bikini line touched up at a professional waxer. NO need to be embarrassed, they've seen it all before and waxed basically every inch of people down there at some point. Imagine someone coming in and asking to get their bum waxed - it happens! Makes a bikini wax seem positively tame, doesn't it?

...Then maintain the new ladyscape yourself using tweezers or at-home wax kits, which will be much less expensive in the long run than getting a professional wax every time.

Hope this helps! Best wishes.

A female reader, kirra07 Canada +, writes (9 March 2014):

Well there are lotion type products like nair that you can apply and remove the hair like that. Either that or if you can work through the embarrassment of getting waxed. Waxing works really well and lasts for quite awhile. And the hair grows out thinner and softer. My first time I was nervous and a bit embarrassed, but remember, they see this all the time. It's kind of like going to the doctor for a Pap test.
