Friend receiving threats and demands for money

Question - (31 March 2009) 3 Answers - (Newest, 1 April 2009)
A male United Kingdom age 30-35, *phex writes:

Okay so,

My friend is getting stressed over a phone call she had today.

From what i gathered shes been threatened by her parents to be kicked out the house for various reasons.

If her grades are not good then shell be kicked out

She has to pay £25 rent (shes 16)

And the phone call she had today was her mum telling her she had to pay for her phone credit (£15 fair enough) and her rent £25 and then £10 because they think her grades are bad or something like that.

Obviously if she doesn't pay they said she can get lost.

I personally think rent at the age of 16 is ridicules and paying money to your parents over grades is pathetic, its not the way to motivate her and even if she gets a bad grade she tried her best.

This random demand for money is enraging to me and i feel sorry for i. Maybe its because i don't experience this kind of relation to my parents but getting threatened to get kicked out the house must be horrible for her and paying rent at her age etc is stupid.

What are her options?

jessica04 agony auntIn the US, parents are required by law to provide adequate clothing, food and shelter, rent free.

Luxery items like a cell phone are not required, nor are brand name clothes. So I can understand if she would have to pay for her cell phone, but it's still pretty terrible to do to a kid.

Call a social services office. I am willing to bet that her parents will be told that they cannot claim rent from a minor child. They may also provide counseling services to settle any issues they seem to have with her.

She could also report this to your school counselors, who usually partner with social services to identify child abuse and properly intervene.

Call social services.

They do not just swoop in and take her away... they can come in and just talk to her parents, explain that this is not the right way to get her to work hard.

You don't need to give any details and can just ask them for advice if you like.

Good Luck!! xx
