A female reader, gail jenkins United Kingdom +, writes (13 March 2009):

No need to worry – head lice or nits are very common and are likely to affect the majority of children during their school lives. Head lice in children are by no means a sign of poor hygiene and yes it is possible to get rid of them easily and quickly, with the right preperation.

A head louse infestation is sometimes referred to as ‘pediculosis’.Head lice are tiny (2-4mm long) wingless brown hair parasites that live in the hair and on the head of humans. Head lice are highly contagious and are easily spread through head-to-head contact. Head lice cannot survive for long away from a host as they need regular meals. The head louse lifecycle lasts approximately 30 days, during which the louse passes through three stages: First eggs ( the nit) , then after shedding their skin (moulting) three times, head lice nymphs become mature adults; this normally takes 10 to 14 days. Within a day of becoming adult hair lice, male and female lice will start to reproduce.

?

The key to treating a lice infestation – and preventing re-infestation – is to break the lifecycle with a product that removes the eggs before they can hatch. There are a number of natural non - toxic products available which assist the process, including nit-nurse.

I got lice once as a kid, it is gross to think about it, but anyone can get it, really. Good luck, I hope you don't have to re-shampoo a bunch of times!

It may well be common but I hate having the bloody things. Its just so uncomfortable and I hate the thought of them in my hair. Eugh. Sorry its just getting me really down which is dumb I know but everything was going really well and life was finally starting to look up for me and now I've got flaming nits.

Thank you for all of your suggestions...my mum has brought me some shampoo stuff which I have to leave on my hair for a while (couple of hours I think) and then comb it all through and see what happens. Fingers crossed.

I hate all of this...it just gets me so down...

A female reader, lexilou United Kingdom +, writes (5 August 2008):

lexilou agony auntGod I spent YEARS trying to get rid of my daughters nits as he kept getting reinfected at school right until 11 by one girl. The school actually sent the culprit home in the end and told the mum NOT to bring her back until she was clear as she was walking round deliberately putting her head next to other kids and saying Ive got nits, and her mum was a teacher at the school.

The best thing I got was an electronic nit comb that zapped them but it didnt kill the egg sacks, wasnt cheap either. For the eggs I used tea tree oil conditioner as they are not supposed to like it (but I think any conditioner is ok as it makes the hair slippery) and combed the eggs out before I rinsed her hair, every other flipping day. I have tried every nit solution going and none of them worked since they took the chemicals out about 12 years ago in uk due to the fact they were dangerous to humans. Repeat the nit combing every time you wash for at least 3 weeks (nits take about 7 days to hatch)and you should be able to get them all. Ask your mum or a friend to help as you will struggle to get them all yourself especially if your hair is thick x

A female reader, hlskitten United Kingdom + , writes (5 August 2008):

hlskitten agony auntThe only thing that got rid of my daughters was the Nitty Gritty comb. It removes the eggs as well as the lice. But you need to do it twice a week for about a month. Then hey presto, they will be gone. I have battled with the little critters for yrs with my daughter with lotions potions and useless fads that dont actually get rid of them for good because they leave the live eggs behind that hatch after about a week.

Get the Nitty Gritty comb.

A female reader, PsyCookie United States +, writes (4 August 2008):

PsyCookie agony auntTry a lice-remover (also remove nits) shampoo. I've heard that "Lice Doctor" is good at it.

Go to your favorite grocery store and ask someone for help to find lice-treatment shampoos or try to find one yourself. Even though they're costlier than most shampoos, it's worth the money.

Good luck!

A female reader, Angela.B United Kingdom +, writes (4 August 2008):

Angela.B agony auntThey seem to be really common these days, especially amongst young children. Chemists sell loads of stuff that kills them, so pop into one and take your pick.

The question you might need to ask yourself is where did they come from? It's easy to get rid of them, but pointless if you are just going to get them back again. It may be people that you live with will need to be treated too.

LouLee agony auntOnly the nit solution you can get from the chemist i'm afraid.

Don't worry about it, we've all had nits at some point in our lifetimes.

Just be quick to get it sorted out to stop you being upset, yeah?
