Do best friends really have that cheesy happy ending?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi, I'm nineteen and I've had my fair-share of boyfriends. Mostly bad, as I've only had one boyfriend that lasted more than a year. The other night, my most recent ex and I broke up and as usual, I went straight to my best friend of seven years (whom is a guy) with all my tears and pains. I told him my ex hit me (which is true) and my best friend just blew up. We took his car and drove all the way to my ex's house which is fifteen minutes away from his house and my best friend punched my ex in the nose so hard, he broke it in two different places! And then he yelled at my ex saying, "Don't you ever go near (my name) again! I will f*ckin kill you if you do!"

On the drive home, I was crying and asked why did he all that for me. He said, "Because I care a lot about you. You are so amazing and beautiful and intelligent and funny. Most of all," and he said this really quietly, "I'm completely in love with you."

Call me daft or stupid or whatever, but what do I make of that? I mean, I have thought about dating him before and I know I like him a lot (might even be love), but he's my best friend. Do best friends really have that cheesy happy ending?

You have a best friend who will always be there for you.

I should know I'm in the same predicament with a friend of mine of 20 years the most amazing, beautiful, charming, desirable, elegant, feisty, gorgeous, honest, intelligent, joyous, kissable, loving, magnificent, naughty, open, perfect, quirky, romantic, sexy, talented, unique, vivacious, wonderful, xciting, youthful and zesty woman in this universe.

Enjoy the person and time you spend with them, it will never be enough.

You have made me so jealous right now haha [not with the fact that you had a shitty relationship, but that you have a guy who cares for you that much!]

I think you should slowly go for it, tell him your feeling upset, rent a movie and watch it together, and then see where it leads. If it doesn't work out, then your relationship with him should be strong enough to survive anything, you can laugh about it and move on. However if it does work out, then what a great way to start 2009! Ether way you won't live the rest of your life thinking 'What If?'

Think 'Ross and Rachel' from friends, or 'JD and Elliot' from Scrubs haha.

Good Luck xox
