I have a problem, with counting! Strange but I do, because I start counting and I don't know I'm doing it. I have to go up to 5,10,15,20 etc. I cannot concentrate at school and I really hate it. At least I will not forget how to count! PLEASE HELP!

Bev Conolly agony auntHi,

Don't worry! You're OK, but it sounds like you're suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Counting all the time must be really annoying, but there are other compulsions that are much more difficult to deal with, like hand-washing and checking the door locks 100 times a day. So at least you have a relatively minor compulsion.

About 2% of people in the UK are affected by OCD at some point, and it can be controlled with medication and psychological treatment.

Here is a really good informational website for you to read about the disorder, and see if it fits what's going on for you. You won't feel so awfully alone, once you realise that this is isn't uncommon in young adults, especially young women:

If you're still in high school, it could definitely affect your ability to study, though, so you should try to enlist your parents' help to get some treatment before you fall behind in your studies. If you don't think that your folks will take your concerns seriously, I recommend that you speak to your school counsellor and explain that you think you might have OCD and ask if he or she can speak to your parents, as it's affecting your schoolwork.

Good luck, hon, and stand up for yourself, so they understand and take you seriously!
