A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I had sex with a guy one night in September. I dont really remember what happened but i know we had sex. We used a condom but i am unsure if he secretly slipped it off or of the condom may have failed. It isvDecember now and my stomach looks pregnant, and mu coworker even asked if i was pregnant! I have also been having all the classic pregnancy symptoms. However, every test Ive taken has been negative. Ive also had some period-like bleeding, but shorter with no cramps. I am going to the doctor in a month to see whats happening with my stomach if not pregnancy, but in the meantime do you have any experience with still being pregnant with negative tests?

Honeypie,

I had an abdominal and a transvaginal ultrasound. That's how they knew it was fibroids and not something else. They couldn't see my ovaries I guess because the uterus is so enlarged.

I'm having a saline infusion sonography ultrasound next week. I'll just see what they say. Thank you for the good vibes - I will try to be vigilant and also to get multiple opinions.

Honeypie agony auntThank you for the update, OP

Did you get an ultrasound? (I'm guessing you did since they measured these fibroids) And what did that tell you?

And definitely get a referral to a GYNO that KNOWS or specialize in these things.

And I would not "automatically" listen to a doctor who said you NEED a hysterectomy, I'd ask for a second (or even third) opinion.

I'm sending you some good vibes. I hope the specialist can help you out. I know several women (who are now in their 40's) who had both bad fibroids and managed to have kids after having some removed. One DID have to go to IVF as she had a fallopian tube removed.

Hi everyone,

So sorry for the delayed response. I wanted to give you an update. Long story short, I have very large fibroids that encompass my entire uterus. There are at least 3, and the largest is approximately 11x13cm.

I will need surgery to remove them. I am kind of afraid because two doctors now have told me that I will probably need to have a hysterectomy and never be able to have kids. At 26, hysterectomy and menopause was not on my radar.

I've lined up an appointment with a specialist who has experience with preserving the uterus when removing large fibroids.

I am confused about a few things, especially:

-Fibroids typically cause excessive bleeding, not less bleeding

-I still *feel* pregnant, and my stomach continues to grow and I am feeling movements in my stomach. Perhaps these are fibroids, but the doctor said my uterus was the size of a 20 week pregnancy, and at the time of my appointment I would have been 20 weeks along if I were pregnant.

And, as you guys suggested I was tested for STDs, pregnancy and gynecological cancers.

So, that is where I am at right now.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all of your advice and helpful words. I haven't been able to move up the appointment, since my doctor is booked. They said they will call if anything opens up. I may try another doctor but I will wait until the end of this week to decide. I also found a website which will allow me to take a blood pregnancy test without waiting for my doctor... I could do that in the meantime.

I will keep you guys updated. You have reminded me to take care of my health... something is going on, baby or not, so I need to be checked out!

aunt honesty agony auntDid you get your doctors appointment moved forward? Also get checked for STI's if this was a one night stand. It could just be bloating and worry. If you cannot remember much due to alcohol or drugs then allow this to be a wake up call that these things are dangerous. Let us know how you get on.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (1 January 2017):

Hi,

I echo everyone else's advice- we are not doctors here and even if we were we can not really provide an answer to this question without any medical tests.

So as everyone else said- put your mind to rest and go see a doctor.

I have felt exactly as you feel and been in a similar situation actually. In my case, it turned out to be PCOS. Sufferers tend to put weight on mainly in the abdominal area, have irregular periods etc. etc. Again, a quick blood test would either confirm or reject that possibility for you (as PCOS sufferers tend to also have hormonal imbalance which shows up in your blood stream).

I look ridiculous- my arms and legs are extremely thin and shapely (as I'm not overweight by any means and I exercise regularly), yet I still get the pregnancy questions coz my abdominal area is frankly exploding right now.

I'm changing my diet to low GI/GL as that has been shown to have a positive effect on PCOS.

However you might not have that but something else. Easiest way to find out-go talk to a doctor/specialist.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (30 December 2016):

CindyCares agony aunt... But also an ectopic ( i.e. outside the uterus ) pregnancy would still test positive by this stage ( at least end of first term ) :

If the count of Beta hCG is lower than 10 Mu / Ml - the test will come out negative - if more, positive .

Now , a normal value of Beta hCg is 12.8 to 77,5 at the beginning of the 3rd week ( i.e. 2 weeks after conceiving ) - and it will DOUBLE every 72 hours approx until 13- 15 weeks.

Now , suppose that for whatever reason Beta hCG is lower than normal ( as it happens,- but not necessarily : about 55-60% of cases - with ectopic pregnancies ) Let's suppose that it does not double but only grows a little - Still , by now , it would be quite enough to be detected by a pregnancy text ( of course if performed correctly )

As for cryptic pregnancies, a large percentage of those cases were cryptic not because there never were any visible / perceptible / measurable signs or symptoms of pregnancy, but only insofar the women did not read correctly the signals their body was sending, and imputed them to other causes. Some women thought it just was not possible (due to the " wrong age " close to menopause, a previous diagnosis of infertility due to PCOS or endometriosis, an history of very irregular and unpredictable menstrual cycles, etc. ) so they did not even think or bother to do pregnancy tests and ultrasound scans .

There are cases of women who, having an inkling that there might be something going on, tested repeatedly for the entire pregnancy and it always came out negative, due to insufficient levels of Beta Hcg- but they were those who , probably due to hormonal imbalances which seem to keep the body from fully knowing it's pregnant- continued to have their periods and to ovulate. Because the woman will continue to bleed throughout the whole pregnancy, the hCG is never allowed to build up and secrete into the urine , since a part of it is shed every time she bleeds.

But this does not seem to be the case of the OP, who has stopped menstruating regularly and only has occasional spotting.

All the above- just for conversation' s sake. Because the advice of course stays the same : see a doctor , OP- asap. Pregnant or not pregnant, you still have to take good care of yourself and your health. Best wishes.

A female reader, Honeypie United States + , writes (30 December 2016):

Honeypie agony auntMove your doc appointment up.

And yes, most over the counter tests are reliable these days as LONG as you follow the instructions.

IF you have tested more than once and they were both negative, you can actually still be pregnant as "Like I see it" mentioned, it can be ectopic or "cryptic" both something you need to check out ASAP.

The looking and feeling pregant.. well, that can stem from you worrying about BEING pregnant, but it can also be from an infection or STD. SO go see the doc asap.

Also if you don't plan on keeping a baby, you are running out of time.

I didn't start showing till around 5 months with ALL 3 of my pregnancies. At around 3 months (where you could be at) the fetus is about 2 inches, the size of a lime, so you probably wouldn't show already.

A female reader, like I see it United States +, writes (30 December 2016):

like I see it agony auntIt is rare but possible to have a pregnancy that goes undetected by early testing, also known as a "cryptic pregnancy," so please don't wait a month. I'm assuming you have health insurance if you are able to see a doctor? Walk in to an urgent care facility that accepts your insurance coverage and explain that you have been having abnormal vaginal bleeding (not a period). You may have to wait a few hours, but you will be seen the same day.

As for when you start showing, that definitely varies from woman to woman. Doing the math, if you conceived at the very end of September you would be about three months along right now (slightly farther along if conception occurred in early or mid-September). A friend of mine is very petite and her "bump" became noticeable right around, if not a week or two before, the three month mark. This is her first pregnancy. So although most women may not show a first pregnancy so early it's by no means impossible. The same range of variation in body type, hCG levels and classic symptoms of pregnancy that allows some women to make it through a full nine months without ever realizing they are expecting (crazy, but it happens) also means that no two women are going to experience pregnancy in exactly the same way.

See a doctor ASAP.

Hope this helps you. Good luck and best wishes.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (30 December 2016):

CindyCares agony aunt When did you take your last home pregnancy test ? Recently ? In this case it's very improbable that you are pregnant.

Home pregnancy tests are deemed to be very reliable nowadays ; they detect the presence of hCG ( human chorionic gonadotropin ) in urine- in theory since as early as 8 days from conceiving . In practice , in some people 's body hCG levels grow faster, in other people 's , slower- but they do grow eventually.

So , an early test may very possibly show a false negative because it was taken too early for your body to have accumulated enough hCG to be detectable. But, you if had conceived in September, by now you would be brimming with pregnancy hormons at this point.

Said that- not all is well, unfortunately- if you have no menstrual cycle, vaginal spotting and other symptoms- something is not working as it should, and, as the other responders have said, you should not wait one more month, but get an appointment now, instead.

As Anon 123 mentions, no, your stomach won't look pregnant this early !- if this is your first pregnancy.

( If it were the second or more, you might "show " sooner, -not necessarily, but it happens - by the end of the 3rd month or so. This because the uterus would have alreday been stretched to its max. expansion before, and muscle would tend to oppose less resistance to expansion.)

A month is too long. Don't wait. Get an appointment as early as possible. Home pregnancy test kits can sometimes be wrong. I had the same experience when I was expecting my second baby. Get tested immediately. Light bleeding or spotting can happen even when you're pregnant. Don't wait! Seriously!

Youcannotbeserious agony auntWhat do you mean you don't remember much and are not sure what happened?

I suspect this could just be you worrying. A bloated stomach can be due to many things, not only pregnancy. As others have already said, you need to get checked out quickly so that you know for sure and have options how to proceed.

I would also get tested for any sexually transmitted infections, as you are not sure what happened that night.

A female reader, Nittynora United Kingdom +, writes (30 December 2016):

Nittynora agony aunt Don't wait a month, you need to be seen as soon as possible. What I would do is ring your doctors surgery, tell them your symptoms and ask for a much earlier appointment if they wont, keep the doctors appointment don't cancel. Then ask/insist to see the practice nurse in the interim waiting period. Ask her to do a pregnancy test, also ask her to do a full blood screening. Tell her you are having bleeding which is unusual. If she knows what she is about, she will consult the doctor on duty at that time, which she should be doing. This may fast track you through faster. They should send you to a consultant gynaecologist. In England that tracking is usually through the GP. I see you are in the states so I'm not sure what your system is there. You may be able to book straight through to a gynaecologist. But do not be fobbed off.

[?]BitterSweetFinale;[?] agony auntI had those signs when I was pregnant, but I ended up losing it. (I had spotting very bad) Not trying to scare you or anything. It's just better to get looked at sooner rather than later, I suggest booking an appointment with a proper gynecologist and have them see what's going on. You should be seen sooner than a month quite honestly. I wish you luck let me know how it goes!

I would see your doctor sooner. They can do a more accurate pregnancy test and if negative investigate what might be causing your other symptoms. Pregnant or not your health should be a priority.
