Unlike women guys hints are more straight forward for example if a guy doesn't want to talk to you anymore he will just ignore you. I doubt that he wants to break up with you he just wants the best for you and he feels thats not him. If you were to break up with him because of that i believe he would be hurt.

 Your probably going to have to ask him exactly what is it he feels for you. He cannot be stuck in the middle he either loves you or he don't. Ask him and find out where you stand in his life and what are his feelings towards you and once you heard his response you should be able to come to a conclusion, what his problem is.
