Yeah we'll if that's all that happened then they don't have a right to take it!! If you had been doing something like prank calling emergency numbers or sending dirty pics then they have a right but not now.

Hold on to your phone!!

baddogbj agony auntThey may have been over reacting to the situation it isn't possible for us to tell from this distance however I have a suggestion.

Print out your question and keep it somewhere safe.

Take it out and take a look in 10 years time when your second child is let's say 3 months old and you have another of 3 years. At that time likely you won't have had a full nights sleep in months, won't have been out with your friends in the evening for years, will still carrying 15lbs of extra weight, your entire life is planned around when the baby needs to be fed or to sleep. Maybe some time when the baby has been crying for 2 hours and you have tried everything, you've fed them, changed their incredibly unpleasant smelling diaper full of poo for the 5th time today, sung to them, danced around the room holding them but they won't stop crying and maybe at the same time the 3 year old has emptied breakfast cereal and milk all over the kitchen floor. .. when you have only the most distant recollection of what it is to have a life of your own instead of dedicating every waking moment to the well being of your children because you love them more than anything in the world even though they are killing you from exhaustion. About that time, pull out your question about what your parents do and don't have the right to do. It will at least give you a laugh for a minute or so before it's time to change a diaper again.

Miamine agony auntThat sucks... but then so does lots of things parents do..

Even I know you love your sport, the clue is in your name.

Unfortunately children have rights, but at home the parents words are the law...

Until you are 18 they have total control over everything you do. So to answer your question Yes they can take away your phone. just like if you go out and buy some slutty clothing that they don't approve of, they can tell you that you will not wear them and make you take them back. You get your license and buy your own car, they have a right to take that away also... All they are trying to do is teach and protect you.

I disagree with the other answers, sorry. IF you earned the money to pay for the phone, it is yours and anyone who takes it from you is guilty of theft.

Yes, they do feed and house you, but that is their legal duty to you until you are 16, so don't be intimidated by that.

It would be interesting to know what you did to have your phone taken away!

baddogbj agony auntYes they can.

But out of interest what do you mean by your "own" money? This would be money that you have earned yourself?

msvee agony auntAt your age, they can do anything that doesn't harm you in any non-superficial way whether you paid for it yourself or not. Sorry, but that's how parents work. Even if you're older and still living under *their* roof, they're in charge of you. Of course, it would be unfair, but at the end of the day basically you wouldn't be here if it weren't for them.

A female reader, Miamine United Kingdom +, writes (10 July 2010):

Miamine agony aunt13 - 15 years old, under the protection of your parents.. they can do anything they want with your property.. you don't have enough money to get a lawyer to sue them...

If however you was working and became a millionaire, things would be a little different as you would have some assets and property.

Why did they take your phone, what did you do wrong? They own the house, they pay all the bills, they provide food, water and electricity so you can live.. They could claim your phone as payment for the services you have recieved from them..

I suggest you appologise and change your behaviour if you ever want to see that phone again.
