Question - (18 March 2015) 10 Answers - (Newest, 18 March 2015)
A female Portugal age 26-29, *arolina Horan writes:

Last week my friend's sister found out she was pregnant and the baby would be born is two weeks. She never had any symptoms or a "typical pregnancy belly". Also she never missed a period, even though they were very irregular.

Now I'm scared that this might happen to me since I've been getting fatter lately.

My question is: can I be pregnant while on the pill and having regular periods?

Thanks :3

Carolina Horan agony auntThank you all so much... I will try to get tested but I just wanted to be sure it was possible to have regular periods while pregnant.

You were all really helpful.

Honeypie agony auntYes, you can be.

I was on BC (the pill) and got pregnant and still had my "periods" throughout the pregnancy.

But it's not common. Not if you have taken the pill as you are supposed to, and haven't gotten any meds that can conflict with the birth-control pill.

Another reason for the weight-gain might be that the pill is messing with your hormonal balance.

Take a pregnancy test, if it's positive (or negative) go see your doctor.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 March 2015):

The pill is not 100% effective, even if taken correctly 100% of the time. Read your instructions - most state that for every 100 women taking the pill correctly 1 - 2 will get pregnant in a year. So if you then don't take the pill correctly - like forgetting it often, always taking it at the wrong times etc...then the chances of getting pregnant increase.

So some women will do EXACTLY what the pill instructions say and will still get pregnant - but it is very rare. Not as rare is the amount of women who forget pills or take it alongside medications that render the pill useless and then get pregnant but will quickly say "but I was on the pill"... Recent studies are showing antibiotics don't affect the pill, it is more any vomiting or diarrhea that is a side effect of some antibiotics that affects the pill. If you are sick, or have diarrhea within 2-3 hours then the pill hasn't been in yor body long enough to work.

If you are worried, go take a pregnant test. But being on the pill does cause some women to gain weight as your appetite varies, there is water retention and other causes to attribute any weight gain to that isn't necessarily pregnancy. At your age, you should be on the pill AND insist on using condoms every time. You don't want an unexpected pregnancy this soon in your life and you want to be safe from STD's.

So whilst it's highly unlikely you are pregnant - it's not impossible. You need to visit your doctor and talk through contraception so you fully understand the method you use and also put your mind at rest with a pregnancy test. From now on, use condoms WITH the pill to ensure you are better protected.

SensitiveBloke agony auntTake a pregnancy test and then you'll know one way or the other.

If you're taking the pill properly, it's unlikely you'd get pregnant but not impossible.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 March 2015):

I think is more paranoia...

As in, something so unexpected happened to someone's so close to you, that you are now paranoid it will happen to you too.

The thing is- you have to figure out if it's good paranoia (oh,I hope I'm pregnant too!) or bad paranoia (oh,shiiiit! I hope I'm not pregnant as well).

In the 2nd case-you can do so many things to limit it (IUD, transplant). The pill is only effective if you take it at the right time every day (needs to be the same time of the day for most pills).

it is POSSIBLE, but HIGHLY UNLIKELY.

So calm down and just get a good test (blood/ urine) done and then you have your answer. Test will tell you, really, I'm afraid we can't ;)

A female reader, So_Very_Confused United States +, writes (18 March 2015):

So_Very_Confused agony auntI know a woman who had 4 babies while on the pill and getting periods. I know a woman who was 3 months pregnant and not missing periods. Yes it can happen.

If you take other meds like antibiotics, with the pill it can cause the pill to be ineffective.

If you are sexually active and he is not using condoms, then I suggest you see a medical professional to discuss it and get a pregnancy test.

I'm a mental health nurse and first off what happened to your friend is the minority. However take a pregnancy test or better still had a urine sample into your gp for testing.

Now if I were you if not pregnant I would change my contraception to a diff brand of pill . I have had weight gain through not bad food choices but through being on the pill . So start be detoxing your body esp get water tablet . To expel any oedema etc

A female reader, CattyCat United Kingdom +, writes (18 March 2015):

CattyCat agony auntTake a pregnancy test. If it's negative but you're still experiencing certain symptoms, go to your doctor and explain, he will take urine/blood tests and book you in for an ultrasound all of which will tell him if you're pregnant.

Just to make you aware, a woman CAN have negative pregnancy results well into the pregnancy, so if you are experiencing some symptoms or what not, you should always go to your GP. It may not even be pregnancy, it could be PCOS, but that's why you should get it checked.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (18 March 2015):

If you have been taking the pill properly it's unlikely, however if you are worried take a test because it will put your mind at ease. As for the getting fatte, being on the pill often makes you put on weight as it shows down your memetabolism.
