Tampons are kinda uncomfortable when you start out, but in the end they're pretty good. it means you can swim and do sport without leakage. if you put it in right, then you shouldn't feel it. and it cant get lost in there either so dont worry! just remember to take it out!

I am 14 & i like tampons A LOT more than pads. For me, pads were pretty uncomfortable as well. So i tried a tampon & it was a bit uncomfortable at first. But after a day or two, then you don't even remember you have one in there. If i were you, i would try it. & see how it feels. If it is really uncomfortable for you, then i suggest you dont use a tampon & just stick with pads.

DenimandLace44 agony auntMrsTetzlaff I wonder if there is something in the tampon tha you are allergic to? Because I've never experienced anything like the things you mentioned...I haven't had any problems with them at all, but if I had had your problems with them... Sheesh. I wouldn't use them ever again!

Poster, in the states the Tampax Pearl with plastic applicators are the best in my opinion. My 13 year old uses them with no problems at all. If you use them and have any problems such as MrsTetzlaff mentioned, discontinue using them immediatly!

person12345 agony auntNo you shouldn't be able to feel them at all if you put it in correctly. When you first try them I recommend you buy a plastic applicator type since they will go in easier and are just generally less hassle to insert. I was scared to try them for the first time too, but now they are much more comfortable and more versatile than pads. Also insert them on a day when your flow is heavy so that there is more lubrication.

When you insert it, aim a bit towards your backbone (rather than straight up). Make sure it is in until your fingers touch your labia (gripping the base). Then push it all the way in. There is no way for a tampon to get lost, as it cannot fit into your cervix. So don't worry about sticking it in too far. The farther it's in, the less you are able to feel it. When you try this, make sure to relax. If you're clenched up it will be difficult and maybe painful. If you're relaxed, it should slide in easily and without any pain. If it hurts, stop, relax, and readjust your angle. Some women like to stand with one foot on the toilet for a different angle.

Tampons are not dangerous so long as you never use the extra super heavy duty absorbency and you don't leave them in longer than 8 hours. TSS is extremely rare and really only happens when people completely forget a tampon for days and it's the super duper hyper crazy absorbency. Good luck!

harleygirl2010 agony auntI don't think they hurt. I know what you mean about pads being uncomfortable. I used to wear them and felt like i was wearing a diaper when i did. Now that i'm with tampons i love them. they may feel weird when you first start to use them, but you get used to them they don't feel as weird. If you don't get it in right the first time don't give up. If you can i would use one with a plastic applicator.

Tampax are easiest i find. You can get them with an applicator. Aslong as you make sure its straight before you insert. They're fine. I forget i have then in. Good luck!

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 December 2010):

heyy, i was nervous about using tampons for the first time aswell, at first i didnt put it in correctly so it hurt and i pulled it straight out, but the first time it will feel a bit uncomfortable but thats normal, for my first time i used tampax compact pearl, it has a applicator and its plastic and has a rounded top which makes it easier and smoother to insert, if you have any questions about how to insert it there are always diagrmas on the leaflets in the boxes of tampons, but id say start with the smaller ones first so it will be easier and when your inserting it you will know when it feels right, and then you can hardly feel it when your used to it, its so much more convenient and not as messy! it also keeps away the smell from your period, if you have one, hope this helps:)

A female reader, MrsTetzlaff United States +, writes (24 December 2010):

I wish I'd never used Tampons. Sometimes I think they are the reason why I had so many Urinary Tract Infections as a teenager.

I am 24 now and have been on pads now for 18 months. The 10 years I used tampons was probably the worst time for my womanly area.

Though, the sex may be better when you're a tampon user... couldn't really tell you why. I just know my libido went down when I stopped using tampons.

I think that tampons are too much of a danger. You have to shower a bit more when you use pads and you cannot swim at the same time, BUT... in the end, maybe you should just try both at separate times and see how you feel.

Your cramps aren't as bad when you're using pads. If you avoid tylenol, then your period shouldn't skip a day either. I find when I use tylenol or Midol that I have a single day during my period where I stop bleeding. I've found other women who have the same problem.

A female reader, petina1 United Kingdom +, writes (24 December 2010):

petina1 agony auntTry the smaller ones first 'lillets'. You can buy a box and practise inserting them even when it's not that time of month. Just relax and try to imagine that the small tampon is your finger and insert it really slowly. Once you start to be more confident you will love the freedom of them. you can even go swimming without fear.
