A female reader, orgirlic United States +, writes (9 April 2008):

My boyfriend and I often call each other baby, although it's not my favorite. One time I called him Booboo and he loved it, so I frequently call him Booboo. Sometimes he even refers to himself as Booboo. I also call him Pooky a lot; he likes that.

I think it depends on what kind of guy he is. My guy is really sweet and tenderhearted, so he likes little cutsie names. If he's more tough or masculine, he might like something less soft but just as affectionate like "babe," "lover" or..."stud," I don't know.

We call each other "honey" quite a bit...that might work for you to start with. It's pretty generic and there's nothing weird about it. My bf also calls me "dear" and "darling" and I think those can be either sex.

Use some inside joke or event that happened between the two of you to make a name, that is always interesting...it's like something only the two of you know what it means. The longer you are together, the better able you will be to have material for making names. Like one time I told my bf, "What will I ever do with your little face?" and from then on, he regularly referred to my "little face." He also calls me his "blue-bonneted milk maid" which takes too long to explain.

The point is, get creative and try different names on him and watch his reaction. Use the ones that make him smile.

Well they've got to be personal to you, so don't just go with any old name. My boyfriend loves 'big boy' or you could call him 'baby'. Just whatever comes to head when you think of him :] if you think he's hot, call him hot.

Do you like the pet names he gives you? If yes, and you think it is cute, then think of something sweet he reminds you of, maybe something you saw in a movie or in real life. Maybe a stuffed animal, like "Teddy Bear". I've heard things like "(my) stud", "boo boo", "ole faithful", "love bug", "tiger". You will have to know if it fits him and whether or not it will bring a smile to him. If it confuses him or makes him think to hard, then it might not be the pet name for him.

Its gotta mean something to you both. Theres no point in any of the people here trying to tell you what you should call your boyfriend. It would mean nothing!

I'm sure you'll think of something that you will feel comfortable calling him.

Don't fret or worry about it, just enjoy being with each other.....

A female reader, O Connor Ireland +, writes (28 March 2008):

O Connor agony auntits not necessary for you to call him pet names just cos he calls you names. its more common for guys to call their gf's names like babe etc. if you dont wanna then dont - its not a huge deal and im sure it doesnt bother him. also - you cant force these things, they need to come from the heart.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (28 March 2008):

I use all of the pet names you say he calls you when addressing my friends and even people I meet for the first time, it just makes conversation less formal so I would say don't bother with a pet name. If you really feel the need I used to call my ex hotrod - obviously not in general conversation, usually when I was after something from him!

A male reader, Namatjira United Kingdom +, writes (28 March 2008):

First of all it is not necessary. Second, any pet name you use ought to be from your own heart. Us guys have no expectations in that area so do not worry if nothing comes to mind. Just love him.
