I need help with a small problem. My boyfriend and I have a cute little thing going where we tell each other to look up cute love songs and then add them to a playlist we have on Grooveshark. He has to look up songs by guy bands and I have to look up songs by girl bands. His are obviously easier to look up because for some reason guy rock bands tend to make more love songs than girl rock bands. I don't get that at all. Anyway I was wondering if anyone could help me with some girl rock band love songs or just girl band love songs in general. I don't necessarily care about genre however I have been giving him a lot of R and B stuff to look up so I would really like to change it up with some rock music. Please help. Thanks for feedback.

Tisha-1 agony auntHow about you open up your category to include singer/songwriters? You'll have more to choose from. :)

I loved this folkie/indie duo from Atlanta, The Indigo Girls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj0yVN8pFNw

I liked this band "Fruit" from Australia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jrxk5y9SSoU

Halestorm! Great rock band, they have some more love song type tracks as well as rockier ones, and their lyrics are all written from a female point of view, which is really refreshing (rock songs with themes of "just because I let you buy me a drink doesn't mean I owe you anything more" and "we need to be able to talk about our relationship"? Yes please!). Epica, Within Temptation and Nightwish are good too, but they're more metal ...

Have you heard of Tegan and Sara? They're kinda indie-rock and really cool. "When I Get Up" is probably the cutest love song from them ever. You should check out "I Know I Know I Know" by them too. It's absolutely amazing but I wouldn't call that a 'cute' love song though. It's more of a rip your heart apart kind of love song. Hahaha

I Know I Know I Know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5cxCZqCODU

I also highly recommend you to check out Sick of Sarah if you don't know them yet. They are an all girls rock band and pretty damn awesome! Most of their songs are love songs. I'd recommend you check out Cigarettes or Bittersweet by them. Here are the youtube links.

Cigarettes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVrAtvUL8vw

Bittersweet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i30ja45MpXg

Hope you check them out! I think "When I Get Up" is probably the cutest song out of the four though!

Lol, thanks so much for the feedback everyone. As for the first person who has commented, I know Paramore, Evanescence, Flyleaf, and Breaking Benjamin. I have one Evanescence song in the list already that she wrote about her husband (she's pregnant now! lol sorry that's off topic too). Didn't think about Paramore and Flyleaf is a Christian band. I love Flyleaf but their songs are more about loving God. (I don't have a problem with that at all I am Christian, but I want something about relationships with people.)

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (22 May 2014):

YouWish agony auntThis one's easy! But before I give my recommendations, you know that the only reason guy rock bands have more love songs is that there are many more guy bands. It's the laws of relativity.

Paramore jumped right into my mind when I read your post...FANTASTIC band. Listen to "Decode". Kan Wakan is another really good up-and-comer with a touch of fusion. Veruca Salt as well, which sounds like the female equivalent of the Killers. Pink is also really good too, though she may not qualify if it has to be a band instead of a singer.

Lacuna Coil is really good as well, though most of their stuff gets pretty hard. They sound like a female Breaking Benjamin. Evanescence and Flyleaf (All Around Me) are also good. The Flyleaf song is particularly good.

Ever hear of Mazzy Star? Chances are you have but didn't know who they are. Listen to "Fade Into you".

Heh, jumping off the subject, when I looked through my itunes library for examples for you, I didn't realize I had accumulated 25,635 songs. Yeesh, no wonder where my computer's memory went to!

"I don't get that at all"

It's simple economics. Boys get into bands to get laid and make money. By far the largest demographic of music buyers is teenage girls, what do teenage girls like? Boys and relationships, it's almost literally the only thing they care about so boy bands focus on writing songs that will be loved by teenage girls and make them sexier, and more appealing to that demographic. I mean you're a teenage girl, your favourite songs and artists are ones you feel are almost singing to you or about you, right? It's all planned that way.

Women then more often than not focus on the same group and same theme but from the female perspective so most of their songs are about relationships going wrong and stuff. About surviving, about heartbreak, about being a strong woman in control of her own destiny.

You look at Paramore for example most of their songs are about overcoming diversity as a teenage girl. Even Katy Perry's songs are all about break ups and stuff, Lily Allen is the same. Hole, L7, Riot Grrrl are all rage against relationships stuff too.

You have to go back to bands like the Spice Girls - Two become One, or Heart - Alone and in general back to 80's power ballads and stuff to find that kind of thing. Manufactured girl bands like All Saints, Girls Aloud all those kind of rubbish ones will have generic love songs you can use.

OP rock is mostly anti-establishment in that way. Now there are tonnes of young teenage generic rock bands, copies of sum 41 and busted who play on the love theme but they're only rock in the sense of playing the guitar, they're just guys who got together to make money and get laid, sex appeal is how that works then. You won't really find many women who play rock in that way singing about bullshit generic concepts like 'love is amazing' because they're just not going to sell at all, girls don't swoon at other women in rock bands unless they're singing about strength, how hard life can be for a woman and overcoming that. Believe it or not girls can be jealous fuckers and they don't exactly find the idea of another girl singing or even talking about amazing her relationship or love is at all. There's no fantasy that can be built from that.

Anyway try the 80's, try the early 90's generic girl bands. I'm not too fond of the Pretty Wreckless so I have no idea if they've any loved up songs. Evanescence might have some but again I think they focus on an aching love theme.

Best of luck, OP, you've really chosen the toughest genre and gender to find songs like that.

CindyCares agony aunt If it does not have to be contemporary, I 'd go with " Landslide " in the Dixie Chicks ' version. ( The original was Stevie Nicks's, I think ).
