Anxiety issues - how do I find new ways of coping?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

So i hate this I used to be a self injurer and used to cut myself. I've been a year cut free now though.

But I developed another issue dealing with self biting and technically pulling off the skin of my fingers, it's disgusting and a horrible habit. Ive had it for maybe now 2 years. I really just want to stop but can't seek medical help or anything like that cause we don't have the money or means for that.

I just want to know how i can stop myself from doing this. I also overly bite my lips to the point where they're bleeding. I've had anxiety issues but never been treated for them and so i use this as somewhat of a coping method.

Help me please.

littlekitten1130 agony auntDo you have any friends that can you can trust enough to talk to? What do you think makes you this way to begin with? You need to find hobbies and activities that get your mind off of bad shit...cause trust me...your talking to someone who understands anxiety. I am not great with advice...and i am not sure if i am even helping...but first see if talking to a close friend or even family member. If not, you can always write down how you feel...that sometimes helps...like a sort of journal or diary. Again...find something to busy yourself with your hands and mind...try video games...reading, writing, doing some sport, art, hang out with people...if you really need more than that...depending on your area there are free clinics around where you can sign up and get free medical help...whether its a physical or pychological problem. I hope this helped...and if not maybe its not in my place to do so...but i promise there is always someone who can help.

I pick my cuticles (the skin around the finger nails) a lot. I have stopped before by rubbing lotion on my fingers instead. But I regressed and went back to it again. Some people use nasty pepper/spices or something and put that on the fingernails etc, so the person won't bite the area.

As far as anxiety goes I've tried many different things. My college insurance made my prescription meds. cheap. I was on Lexapro, and it helped, but then it got to a point where I didn't care about barely ne thing and I stayed up late at night.

Now I use herbs. Anxiety has many different levels. All of them are manageable. You are not going to die from it. However it can wear out your adrenals? I used L-Theanine, a natural ingrediant found in tea, but also in herb stores for my anxiety, and it helped. I also was on St. John's Wort, but it stopped working and made certain habits worse, so, but Idk it could work for you.

The most important thing to remember dealing with anxiety is your sleep. Never, ever, compromise your sleep for anxiety. I used to have racing thoughts and maybe sometimes still will, but I used tylenol pm, but then eventually I used cheap sleep meds from wal-mart. Don't become dependent on these things, but use them for nights when you have trouble sleeping. Also bring a trusted adult with you, since some stores require you to be 18 to purchase them. If you are not into meds read some books about conquering your fears. I can be a very relaxed person, but when I get into an argument or something big with someone I love, I can get a flare up of anxiety issues. Find out your triggers, as in what makes you anxious? Talk to someone when you are feeling anxious, such as a friend. Remember that some anxiety is healthy, but if you are in a relaxed place and your heart is still racing, maybe you need more than just "waiting for it to go away." My anxiety has gotten so bad sometimes that I have been in tears, wanting it to go away

hey anxiety is no joke..i have it too but i take meds for it. there are hospitals and clinics that are free for you to visit just look in your area...but talking to some one helps a lot also, try to find something creative to do to keep your mind occupied..play a video game or write down in a journal what your feeling at the time of these attack..and chewing gum is also helpful instead of biting your lips.
