Am I to blame? My job's on the line.

Hello guys and girls. So my question I will keep brief. Just need opinions really.

I am the director of a public relations company. We have this new brand for a big well established company (they've put it out as side project) the new brand we were appointed to do their pr and it's been tough given the nature of brand.

Anyway they had new product, my boss came up with fab idea for stunt. The client paid a fortune to do it as they trusted us. They were uneasy if would work, but I assured them it would. Leading up to event we got them some great press and therefore on the day itself we thought be fine.

Anyway it's flopped. No one came. No ones mentioned it or run it in the press post the event. Was an epic fail. As said we did everything we could, we got them pre press to get people to come, but people just didn't.

As a result the client was not happy as feel wasted 80,000 and now my boss is blaming me. As will lose the client now, who are the biggest payers in our company.

I just want to know am I to blame? What do you suggest I do?

I'm in a terrible panic over it all and scared job on line and let everyone down

sugarplum786 agony auntYou need to not get defensive when they start questing your ability and say that with any project there is a risk. Also its not just the advertising one has to look at the appetite the market has for the product. Surely your boss would have given the go ahead, so some accountability also sits with your boss. You need to have all your paper work in order including any one else that worked on it and anyone that signed off including the client. Remember marketing companies provide ideas and direction but ultimately the client has to be happy for what they are paying. Further its not just about advertising but also is the product any good? Maybe research how similar products have done as a back. Goodluck.

Aunty BimBim agony auntI don't understand sageoldguy's response. However, its a tough question, and not being privy to how things work in your company it will be difficult to give specific advise.

If your previous record with the company has been good, hopefully the boss, once he gets over HIS shock, should be able to view this with some perspective, remember he is having to deal with the loss of a BIG client, he is probably beating himself up for suggesting the stunt, probably preferring to forget his input.

There is not much you can do but ride it out, I understand about the panic and fear of your job being on the line.

Line up your ducks, in other words make sure all the paperwork and records to do with the job are in order in case you are asked questions, my fingers are crossed that all you need to do is wait for the storm to blow over with minimal impact on the company or you, and that you can build up your, and your bosses, confidence again.

I don't blame anyone (your client, boss, or you) for being upset. It could be the product or maybe you aren't the right agency for the product.

Either way "who's to blame" is hard to know and hard to be concerned with as it just doesn't matter in the scheme of things.

If you do lose your job ask for a good reference and find another one. Your boss will find other clients. If the client's product is meant to succeed it will.
