A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (17 May 2015):

chigirl agony auntIf you're on birth control you're protected, even through your "pill free" week. It protects you the entire time as long as you've taken the pill on a daily basis prior to the pill free week. You do not need to use condoms for extra protection during this time, unless you prefer to use extra protection, in which case you should use them during the entire month.

It's not like it stops working as soon as you stop taking the daily pill. The added hormones from the previous month help protect you, the dose of hormones you've been taking is sufficient to last you AT LEAST 7 days without adding more hormones, which is why you have the pill free week. But it's not like you're off the pill... Likewise, if you are in the second or third week of the pill, skipping it a day will not reduce the level of protection.

Also, women who have taken the birth control pill for years have added so much hormones to their bodies that it could take a year (or more) after stopping the pill completely, before they can have children! Because the effect can linger on for so long, they just can't guarantee for more than 7 days as each woman is different, and 7 days is within a very safe time range.

Read the leaflet. If the leaflet is insufficient in information, google the birth control pill in question and read about it online. That should give you the best answers.

A female reader, like I see it United States +, writes (17 May 2015):

like I see it agony auntThe insert that comes with your pills should specify how long you must take them regularly before they can protect you from pregnancy - usually something like two weeks.

So, if you have been taking birth control daily for longer than that time period, you are protected against pregnancy with about a 92-99% effectiveness rate (depending on how "perfectly" you take the pill; see your pill insert for the numbers specific to your pill) at ALL points of your pill pack - EVEN the sugar pills.

Using condoms as a backup method and as STI protection is a wise choice, so good for you for doing that. But the pill is designed to protect from pregnancy by itself if need be, provided you take it each and every day around the same time of day and have been taking it for longer than the time period needed to establish protection before having unprotected sex.

I'm not a doctor but it is very, very unlikely that you could become pregnant in the circumstances you describe. Try not to stress about it, though, as THAT could make your next period late.

Hope this helps. Good luck and best wishes!
