Am I having a nervous breakdown?

A female age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I feel like I'm having a nervous breakdown.

I can't face doing anything, I haven't been going to uni, and in fact, I find it incredibly difficult to do the most simple tasks, like wash up or even have a shower. I am dissinterested in everything, and have begun to shy away from social situations.

My nerves are in tatters, the slightest noise makes me jump and puts me into a state of panic for 15 minutes. I'm always on edge, my heart rate is really high, making me shakey and anxious.

My sleeping pattern is terrible, I either can't sleep at all, or sleep for 16 hours a day. I slept for 9 hours last night, and could honestly go back to sleep right now for the rest of the day.

And I sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference between whats real, and what's not real.

For instance, I hear a noise, and my brain can't tell if it happened in real life, or in my head. I'm constantly asking if the phone is ringing, or if the door just went, or asking if someone called my name... But more often then not, it didn't happen.

I don't know what this is, is it a nervous breakdown? Is it something else? Is it nothing?

You need to go to your doctor. This could be a breakdown or serious depression, and the only way you will find out is if you go to the doctor.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 April 2010):

I don't want to sound insulting but the internet is not the place to find the solution to this medical problem. Go to your doctor and soon.

Consider your diet, any recent mental trauma you may have suffered and tell your doctor everything.

No one here can nor should attempt to diagnose this for you.

We can however wish you luck and hope that it's nothing that can't be solved.
