i am 16 and a half years old, and 5 foot 9.74 inches. i feel that all of the boys that i know are taller than me. i know that i am not VERY small, but i can't help but feel that i am below 90% of the boys that i know.

Am i of average height?, and when am i likely to stop growing?-height is really important to me and i don't want to stop yet.

A reader, anonymous, writes (27 February 2009):

I am a short guy nearly 17 and i feel that i have done all my growing now.I havent grown in a couple of years,I have an older brother who is 21 and he is 5'6 and an older sister she is 18 and 5'7.I on the other hand have struggled to get where i am now.I had to get checked out by my doctor has i was shorter than alot of the boys in my year.He did some tests and just said that i was in the lower percentile for my age. That was 2 years ago and i measured 4'8.Even now when my mum checks my height i havent gained an inch.I apparently got my grandmothers height not my parents. My grandmother was 4'9 whereas both my parents are 5'5 and 5'7.I hate being this short has i get alot of silly name calling from people.I remember being starting senior school and i was 4'4 there was 3 other girls and 4 boys which were short.I was called littlelegs because my school blazer was down to my knees and all you could see was my short legs. The boys has the most hassle has girls were expected to be shorter. When i left school i had a chinese girl who was my height and another boy he was 4'9.So i know definetly i am not average height.

Has soon has i get out of bed in the morning i know nothing is different.I will still be the shortest in my family and have to stretch for everything i want.My mum tries to put my items lower than my sister and brothers or i have to climb on a chair to reach them.If i am in a rush and i cant reach something my sister is okay with getting it but my brother tends to be wicked and say things like naw go get a chair.Which takes time for me and wouldnt take him long to do so.Then when i step outside of my home i encounter loads of problems.Take the bus when i go out sometimes the bus step is lowered and i can step on other times i struggle.I hate standing up has it is too awkward or the only seats are at the back of the bus and they are higher and my feet dont touch the floor so i end up with pins and needles in my feet.Talking to people in the shop is a nightmare has i am treated like a 10 year old and i have to always look up when i speak to them.Buying clothes is a nightmare to has i have to go to junior sections where the clothes fit much better and only need altering abit.My shoes are size 2 and for some reason i have to be lucky has they sell out alot quickly. So try to look out for us shorter people has i am forever being pushed and shoved and being told am i alright down there.Just be abit for considerate to my needs i dont expect too much.I cant help looking 10 and i dont like being stared at by people adult and kids.I understand that i have to try harder to get respect but i believe that treat people has you want to be treated.THANK YOU

Hi

I'm A scottish boy 13 years old and I'm 5 ft 4". I think I'm about average but I'm growing quite fast and I think I may be over 6 ft because my grandparents where over 6ft 5" so, maybe.

No one is too tall and no one is too small, you are what you are what you are.

Hi.

Well im 15 years old. I'm too tall at 6ft and unfortunately still growing. Loads of guys in my year and above are about 5'10" or 5'11" or 5'9". You are not small, if i remember you are about average height for your age plus you will probably continue to grow and hit a growth spurt at some point in the near future.

I'm a 13 year old English girl, My height is around 4'11" and I'm almost the same height as my DAD! He still manages to get girlfriends though! You shouldn't worry about your height really... Unless you struggle to reach things like me. :(

Anyway, Ever since my 8 year old foster brother compared his height to mine I've been asking myself the same question as you. Unfortunately my entire family's short so the answer's 'No' and I probably never will be of Average Height.

I am confuesed though when I was 13-14 I shot up to the height of about 6ft put the past 2-3 years I've only grown an inch but I want to be at least 6'4, will I get another growth spurt, currently I'm getting very stocky but will get any taller ?

when i was 16 i was about 5'10 or 5'11... i grew however until i was about 22 or 23. Long story short, I am about 6'2 and 7/8" ju st under 6'3" and I wear a size 11 1/2 shoe or 12 sometimes. I have a 34-36" inseam depending on the pants, size 17 1/2 neck, 175 lbs or so, 34-35 sleeve length. I am by no means the tsllest dude in the world, but tower over a good majority of my friends, family, co workers, etc. Fear not my young friend, you will probably grow a bit yet. Everyone IS different...my cousin's son is 16 and he is already 6'3 and has been since age 14 or 15. You never know.

hey, yes youll probably grow more yett. every male is different , very different infact when it comes to growth. they should not say that we stop at 21 as that is so wrong. Some may stop at 16 some will stop at 23 or 24. it depends if you have average small or tall parents and the age you was when you had your puberty growth spurt. For example my parents are tall 5'7 and 6'2 3/4. i had my puberty growth spurt at 10.5 years of age finishing at 12. at 5'5. how odd is that.lol. and i continued growing very slowly up untill the age i am now which is 20. and i am still growing now at around 6'2. and i beleive i still have a way to go yett my chest is currently beggining to broarden out and growing taller and putting a bit of weight on too. i could be 6'6 by 22 or 23 years of age. so this thing about stopping at 21 is wrong. we are all different and my growth pattern is very rare i dont no any of my friends with that acsept 1 girl who had 2 growth spurts one at around 10 other at 17 i could be folling that same trend but a male version. if you have had your puberty growth spurt at average age already 14-16 and your parents are average then your looking at around 5'11 - 6'0 by age 19 if they are tall then about 6'2.

Anyway you are not that short, i think the average height for males in the UK is something like 5'10 but then it would vary on your family background and race...

and remember, good things come in small packages!!

As a shorter woman (5'1") I have to say that I get along better with shorter men-- more eye contact, none of those "OMG, it's the tallest man in the world with the shortest woman in the world! How do they do it???" looks I get when I walk around with a guy over 5'10."

Don't worry, attractiveness to women (if that's why you worry about height) has more to do with whether you're caring, interesting, and take care of your looks. I hate to spread stereotypes, but I do find that women are less visually oriented than men are.

I am 16 and a half years old too and i am 6ft4 aprox. Dont worry about your height you are average height for a fully grown male now. On average most males grow upwards untill they are 18 and outwards untill 21 (filling out). Dont worry about being short because you are average now so just think you cant get smaller so why does it matter? I worry about my height because i dont know when im gonna stop I've grown an inch since new years. I already cant buy jeans long enough in a shop because they longest inside leg they do is 34inches and im almost 37. YE DONT WORRY JUST SAY THEY ARE OVER AVERAGE.

hi,

im a 5'9' 26 year old uk male and I undertsand you might feel a little small but the fact is mate, your average and what a lot of people dont think about is the overall apearance, you might stand next to someone who 6ft and feel small but the fact is anyone looking at you both overall will see hardly an difference, theres 12 inches in a foot so someobody who 6ft is less than 5% bigger than you, its not much of a difference. Being tall can be an advantage with some ladies but as long as your average hieght then you got no worries, the avergae size for a UK woman is just over 5'4 so your not going to get many girls taller than you at 5'9 even wearing 3 inch heels so you ve got nothing to worry about. Im not blowing my own trumpet but I was cock of my year at school and had girls falling at my feet from the age of about 12 when i was only 5'6, by the time i was 5'9 i was 15 and have not grown since but I was still always the most popular boy in my year at school and there was 200 in my year, then at college again i was very popular and at university it was a different girl every night. At 26 i shave my head because starting to lose my hair and i still get loads girls wherever i go, im currenty going out with an absolutley stunning girl who really is very beautifull. I am a good looking bloke (well so im told) but Im no brad pitt but I can still get the best looking girls, its all about confidence mate. Girls love a cocky confident bloke who can talk to them not someone who's worrying about their looks and height. besides your worrying about nothing your average height.

I am rather on the short side, being 43 yrs old and only 4'9 i am as tall as my niece and she is 10 yrs old.I mean it isnt very nice having to keep looking up to the majority of the people around me.I am the shortest in my family 2 sisters. They are both younger 33 yrs old and 5'9 and 35 yrs old and 5'7.The youngest being a whole foot taller than me.Even worse when she wears heels has they are usually 3ins has she likes to go out and be seen at 6'0.My other sister is alot more dignified in me being shorter than her she likes to wear flat shoes when we all go out together.I dont like waring shoes heigher than 2 ins so i cant even manage to reach 5'0.I have trouble keeping up while walking with my sisters and my youngest gets really annoyed having to keep on stopping.I have now found that over the last 2 years i have osteoporosis and shrunk to 4'8.My youngest sisters daughter actually noticed the difference in my height and blabbed to everyone that i was now shorter than her.I like meeting up with my aunt Mary she is really adorable has she is a little taller than me and loves cuddling .She is actually 4'11 so she has always been taller than me anyway. Now she is 2ins taller. The doctor is trying to control the osteoporosis has there is a chance he can stop me shrinking too much.He could stablize it at 4'6.So i cant see why moaning about your height helps anyone. No it doesnt have you heard the saying worse things happen at sea.Come on get a grip on life.Take a look at me i am trying not to complain too much

I dont see what you have to worry about be just over 5'9 alright it might just be average height.I on the other one am shorter than average,i reached a height of 5'0 when i was 14.I never grew another inch so aint you the lucky one.My 2 younger sister's are taller they reached 5'6 and 5'8,my oldest brother reached 6'4 it dont make sense. If i need any help my older brother is usually on hand that helps me.He even stands up to people. My 2 younger sisters love me the way i am and still call me their big brother, even though they have 6/8 ins on me.I was told when i was younger that i wouldnt grow too tall, the doctor said i would be lucky if i reached 4'10 so they cant always tell can they. Now i am alot older the only thing i am looking forward to is not shrinking too much has i try to check my height every 6 months. At my last doctors check up my height measured just a smidge under 5'0 so i cant see anyone complaining abot rounding the figure UP hey.My mum and dad were 5'7 and 5'8 so i couldnt really see why i ended up this short if we are supposed to take after our parents. But HEY i ended taking after my grandmother who was 5'2 now she is 70 plus years old and she has shrunk to 5'0 so she even still has the edge on me and i probably wont be taller than her due to us both shrinking. In our pics they are pretty funny has i stand one end and my grandmother stand the other end we looked like a pair of bookends lol lol.Least we can laugh abou it hey.

You're 5'9 and you're worried about guys being taller than you? Do you play basketball or something? When I was your age we sized each other ways. Maybe things are different in the UK but here in the US we aspired to be manly, butch, or tough, not tall. You should be in your prime around age 23 to 25. You might not get taller but your body will mature.

Danielepew agony auntI understand your worries about your height, as I used to worry, too, when I was your age. Now, time has taught me that your height isn't important.

I should add that I'm 5 feet 7 inches :-). Where does that leave me? I don't care. Most girls are not taller than me. And, when they are, I love it.

Hi! Height worrywart. Gee! you are taller than me, And I am only 5 foot 6inches. One's height shouldn't matter one bit, that is unless you want to be a worrywart about it. A person is really what is in his, or her, heart and mind, not how tall we are. And a loving, caring man, or woman, are pretty tall in my book. Just forget about those 90% others, And being a man, or woman, is more about our relationship to others, not about our height. And to love others must begin in the Self-Love of who and what we are.

Do hope that this has been helpful to you. Hey! From a shorter man to a taller man, you are doing A-Okay.

myp agony auntGuys usually dont officially stop growing until there about 25, so youll be fine. 5'9 isnt short and youll probably average out at about 6ft when you do stop growing. My cousin was about 5'8 when he was 16 and then he shot up to 6'4 so everyones different but you still have a ways to go.

best of luck
